The key is to address issues quickly, while there is time for change both for the teen and his or her family .
We believe our teens today are reacting to an existential emptiness in our culture with negative coping behaviors such as over use of social media, substance addictions, mental health issues, eating disorders, school failures, and even suicides. Treating the cause of these issues as well as symptoms requires a physiological, mental, and spiritual approach in order for teens to thrive and attain lasting transformation into adulthood. Encompass takes such an approach, sensitive to the unique needs of our adolescents and their family members, whose involvement is highly encouraged throughout treatment since family is where we all live.

Despite your hard work, does it seem like problems continue to pop up for you? You might consider your family disorganized or even chaotic. You have noticed a shift in your child or children and are concerned, it may be caused by divorce or a loss in the family , or other events that cause stress. You are worried about their socialization and they seem to just not be themselves. Friends, family and maybe even teachers are expressing their own concerns regarding your child. You are not sure if it's your parenting or what more you can provide your child. This is scary, overwhelming and it takes courage to admit it isn't working.

Most everything we learn about how to do life and relationship comes from our family of origin, both nature and nurture.
For many life can be one of two things, either you feel like you are never enough so why try or you feel like you have to always keep pushing and keep going never able to relax. If never enough, you have tried everything to pull yourself out and people are quick to tell you how, so you put on a smile to hide it. On the other, you pride yourself on how much you accomplish but feel less than when you slow. Maybe you are struggling in a relationship and ready to learn how to not only have healthier relationship-building boundaries but also interested in learning out how to draw closer through empathetic attunement.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
