I am experienced in treating suicidal ideation and self harm.
Parents, are you worried that your teen or young adult may be stressed or depressed? Are they refusing to communicate with you, staying up real late at night, becoming defiant and or have excessive use of gaming or social media? Has social distancing caused them to isolate from friends and family and sleep all day? Have they seemed to have lost all motivation and have no structure to their daily life? My name is Tametra and I am the founder of Jacobs Ladder Therapies. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 15 years experience working with teens and young adults.

With over 20 years of almost exclusively working with SF Bay Area teens and their families (and a mother of two teenagers),-I have a solid understanding of the issues adolescents face, the struggles they encounter, and the mental health problems that are so very prevalent for them today. Depression and anxiety are at all all time high for teens and understanding the why isn't always so clear. My clients are facing a myriad of concerns - school refusal, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, substance use, social struggles, disordered eating, behavioral issues, just to name a few. One in thing is common is that they are all hurting,

I have assisted individuals in overcoming issues they may struggle with that are connected to trauma, grief & loss, depression, general anxiety, COVID19 anxiety, juvenile justice systems, oppositional teens, suicidal ideation and marital and family conflicts.
As a person of color born and raised in the Bay Area, I truly believe in my task and role as a therapist to reach those who feel as though their story is unheard and invalidated by the world we currently live in. My strengths as a therapist consist of gaining over nine years of experience working in the field of mental health as a mental health clinician under the non-profit realm and private practice within Santa Clara County. Over the course of my experience I have built skills in providing therapy to socioeconomically diverse families, children, individuals, couples, and those who identify with the LGBTQIA population.

I specialize in depression, anxiety, identity, relationships, suicide and self-harm, and trauma.
Hey, I’m glad you’re here. There are so many issues that can arise throughout our lives, either in our relationships, work, school, or even with ourselves. They can impact how we interact and perceive relationships, our thoughts and emotions, and how we think we fit into the world. These issues can cause us to feel confused, isolated, misunderstood, and unheard. Using empathy, sincerity, compassion, and authenticity, I want to help you unravel these complex issues and understand who you are, what factors impact these issues, and connect you with who you strive to be.

"Find stability, recovery and growth during life's challenges." The idea of 'going to therapy' evokes a variety of reactions. While some may be eager to see what therapy is all about and are ready for a journey of self-exploration, I tend to see people because they are struggling, they are in pain, they are grieving, feel misunderstood or are desperate for something to change. Demands are high in fast-paced Silicon Valley. Your struggles may be unseen by others--you may not know who to talk to about deeply felt concerns. I invite you into my practice.

I have personally suffered with mental health challenges through different stages in my life. I know what it’s like to talk to friends/family but not gain any movement towards a happier life. It wasn’t until I connected with a therapist and admitted to myself that I was sick and tired of feeling symptoms of anxiety, depression, and setting healthy boundaries that I was able to make progress toward a happier life.

I believe the purpose of therapy is to create a safe and validating environment where people can focus on creating a "life worth living". I help facilitate this journey by focusing on both acceptance and change in a warm, interactive and thoughtful fashion. If you are someone who is struggling to manage your emotions and behaviors because of anxiety, depression, or trauma we can work together to define the life you want and overcome the obstacles to it.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to flourish in life while others continually struggle or why one person responds differently than another to the same circumstances? Because our internal world is invisible, most of us don’t realize the impact it has on our moods, our perceptions and our lives. We find ourselves reacting to life. We may try to regain control by attempting to manage the external world and when we do, we experience varying amounts of stress. If you are searching for answers on how you can improve the quality of your life, please call me for a free consultation.

Sometimes having compassion for ourselves is much harder than extending compassion to others. It’s difficult when we are dealing with thoughts that convince us we are broken or stuck, or when we are facing issues that seem larger than us, issues that appear beyond what our personal power can handle. Along with these thoughts of uncertainty come feelings such as anxiety, sadness, shame, and grief, all of which we struggle to avoid. This can make living a valued existence appear difficult or impossible. Yet it is. You don’t need to go it alone. I can see that power within you, even if you are unable to see this in yourself.

We all want happiness. However, we could lose clarity that has once helped us make healthy decisions when life prompts us with challenging situations: marital problems, family discord, difficult parent-child relationships, acculturation issues, individual psychological problems, spiritual crisis, personal existential crisis, or transitional life issues. My calling is to help people find happiness, whether by developing new insights into their troubling predicaments, increasing mutual understanding amongst family members through effective communication, empowering human diversity, thereby fostering a satisfactory outcome.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
