My specialties include complex trauma, childhood abuse/neglect, healing from narcissistic/abusive relationships, codependency and relationship issues, substance use disorders, masculinity and men's issues, grief and loss, spirituality, and working with cultural minority issues such as family conflict, intergenerational trauma, cultural identity & racism.
I specialize in recovering from the effects of complex trauma. People with narcissistic, abusive, or neglectful parents or partners or who grew up in unsafe environments can develop issues with trusting themselves, have difficulty maintaining close relationships, struggle with an inner critic, vacillate often between depression and anxiety, lack a solid sense of identity, or feel a sense of emptiness when their lives seem great on paper. Sometimes that trauma can become part of one's identity. I work with clients to build insight, boundaries, self-compassion, and acceptance to free themselves from it & live more fulfilling lives.

Are you a professional or executive who has found that the one thing you haven't been able to overcome is substance use?
Many successful professionals don't address substance problems until they become major issues because they don't feel a residential rehab stay or participating in Alcoholics Anonymous is a good fit for them. We can work together in a private and confidential setting to achieve your goals. As a former successful executive, I understand your unique situation.

Do you feel like past wounds are preventing you from moving forward? Perhaps you have a difficult time understanding why you continue to repeat unhealthy behaviors or feel ashamed for not living up to your own or others' expectations. You probably feel a mixture of emotions: motivated to change, but afraid of feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable. Maybe you doubt your ability to change or question if talking about painful issues can actually help you feel better. Having these thoughts and feelings is a normal part of the growth process.

Finding a therapist is hard! It doesn't help that there are so many to choose from. I think the most important part is actually liking the person you are talking to. Take a look at my page (and website), and if you think we may be a good fit, I encourage you to call me for a free 15 minute consultation. If we end up working together, I will do my best to find which methods align with you so that I can help you get to the place you want to be.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
