Clients in my practice want something to change, even if they don't know what. Some wish to unlearn unhelpful habits, to navigate emotions better. Others struggle in relationships or with general unhappiness. They feel lonely, unsatisfied, irritable, lost, stuck, overwhelmed, unmotivated, isolated, and hopeless. They may use terms such as trauma, depressed, abandoned, stressed, anxious, numb, grieving, and anxious/avoidant. They seek to feel like a whole person and in charge of life. They wish to grow and nurture their relationships with others and themselves. They desire to feel more at peace and at home in themselves.

The single most healing part of therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist: feeling like you know and trust them on a personal level. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a real, significant relationship, just a different kind of one. As such, much of my work is around building and strengthening the relationship. My style works best with people who have tried out other therapists and found their styles too limited or regimented; wanting someone who more deeply and actively shows up in the room with you. I see us as two experts collaborating: I, an expert of therapy, and you, the expert of yourself.

Do you feel stuck in a life that drains you, unable to find your way forward? Trauma and the weight of expectation can cloud your vision, making it hard to see beyond the life you feel trapped inside. I help my clients see the light of possibility and move towards it. Therapy can be a space to imagine new ways forward, practice self-expression, and learn to embrace your whole self. Our therapeutic relationship will be dedicated to holding space for all parts of you and your story: the parts that hurt, the parts that hope for something more, and the parts that feel too challenging to explore alone.

Therapy is an amazing placebo. You do not NEED a therapist to learn, transform, and grow your awareness of yourself. I firmly believe whatever it is you are seeking to learn, change, or make peace with, you can do it. The benefit of working with a trained therapist who sees you, gives your sense of agency and innate wisdom the respect it deserves, and offers an outside perspective on your experience informed by evidenced-based theory and practice, is that the pace of growth is greatly accelerated.

Do you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, or defeat as a result of trauma or a significant life change? Maybe a relationship has ended or a new phase of life has just begun. Perhaps you’re living with the long-term effects of abuse, assault, or other traumatic experience. You may feel unsafe & out of control of your life or emotions, anxious about even the smallest things, or like you just can’t find your footing. Eventually, these things start to overflow into other areas of life: your relationships, work, and decisions about the future. And yet, despite how hard things are right now, you know there’s more to life than this.

You are a quirky, creative spirit seeking out your place in this world. You love the path you’re on. But sometimes you feel alone, alienated, or overwhelmed by the world around you. Sometimes a feeling of emptiness, meaninglessness, fear, or uncertainty, keeps you up at night. You ask yourself, “why am I here? And what should my life be about?” You wonder about how to put your unique gifts to their best use. And how you might come to feel less alone as you learn to do so. Sometimes you still worry that you might just be too weird to find the kind of community, loving relationships, inner peace or success you are seeking.

Sex-Positive, Kink Allied Therapists

Why might an individual want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?

A sex-positive or kinky individual may want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist because the client may feel safer and more supported discussing their experiences and challenges. A therapist who identifies as kink-friendly will have experience with clients having diverse sexual preferences and will likely be nonjudgmental and supportive about issues brought to the table. It is important to note that sex-positive, kink-allied individuals may find equal success with therapists who do not have such specialized knowledge and background. The most important factor in the success of therapy is for the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond.

Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in sex-positive, kink-allied treatment?

Generally, no. There are limited training programs and unofficial accreditations that therapists can pursue, but a therapist’s expertise will ultimately come from their previous experience with similar clients, their engagement with organizations that promote sex positivity or kink-allied lifestyles, and the importance they place on safety and cultural sensitivity.

How can individuals recognize a good sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?

An experienced therapist is able to help clients explore their sexual identity and expression and relieve any discomfort or stigma attached to discussing such matters and the client’s overall challenges. A therapist who is sex-positive and kink-allied is able to create an environment that honors a client’s experience and sexual preferences. To recognize a good therapist, clients can simply ask directly about topics and issues important to them and gauge their comfort level and connection with a clinician based on the responses.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist with a focus on sex positivity and alternative sexual lifestyles?

Some individuals may feel most comfortable knowing that the clinician they’re working with has a commitment to creating an atmosphere of sex positivity and has experience with relationship diversity and alternative relationship structures. Working with a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist may help clients respect their own challenges and improve identity-affirming treatment.
