My specialties include complex trauma, childhood abuse/neglect, healing from narcissistic/abusive relationships, codependency and relationship problems, substance use disorders, masculinity and men's issues , couples therapy, and working with Asian American/minority issues such as family conflict, intergenerational trauma, cultural identity & racism.
Though I work with most issues, I specialize in helping people recover from complex trauma. People with narcissistic, abusive, or neglectful parents or partners sometimes develop issues with trusting themselves, have difficulty maintaining close relationships, struggle with an inner critic, vacillate often between depression and anxiety, lack a solid sense of identity, or feel a sense of emptiness when their lives seem great on paper. Sometimes that trauma can even become part of one's identity - I work with clients to build insight, boundaries, self-compassion, and acceptance to free themselves from it & live more fulfilling lives.

ATTENTION PROFESSIONALS STRUGGLING WITH HIGH ANXIETY AND/OR RELATIONSHIP ISSUES (AT WORK OR HOME): You really want to talk with someone, but you're not sure who to trust. When you describe tough challenges at work or with your family, you want someone who GETS IT. The last thing you need is to discover that your counselor has too little experience to bring any new solutions to the table. You're looking for someone who's "BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT." Someone who inspires confidence with the way they approach their work, and someone who's already solved the problems you're dealing with.

People do not exist in a vacuum. The person you are today is a collage of various influences and experiences. These influences range from relationships with family and friends, community, religion, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic backgrounds, education, and the culture in which you were raised. What brought you in today does not solely define you and it may not be the root of your pain. Through therapy, we have the potential to move beneath the surface and go deeper into the roots of your struggles to help you develop a greater understanding of what troubles you.

Welcome to my practice. I have about 15 years of clinical experience and have been featured on NBC/KCAL/HLN as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Suffering is a certainty in our lives, but sometimes it becomes more than we can bear. Oftentimes, we can become caught up in blaming ourselves- and though sometimes there can be truth to the notion, it's not true enough to guide us towards healing. We may feel slowed down, stuck, agitated, angry, frustrated or sad. There is nothing wrong or unacceptable with you or your feelings in my practice. They are part of your truth that will guide you to a deeper level of knowing.

Most men will experience some form of impotence in their lifetime, and the likelihood of developing symptoms increases with age and declining health. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and clogged arteries due to heart problems, or old age. In normal, healthy men, erections are activated by arousal, which activates pleasure centers in the brain. The brain sends messages down the spinal column, ending in the penile arteries. Pressure/shockwave treatments supports athletic sports injuries that can also contribute to inflammation restricting blood flow in the body.

Despite our evolutionary progress the essence of being human hasn’t changed. We require acceptance, understanding, compassion, love and connection. We struggle with our fears, hopes, dreams, and relationships. These are the common issues that bring people into therapy. The pathway to healing can be achieved in many ways. Each person has his/her own unique perception and emotional world and my first task is to understand yours. Together we can create your path to self acceptance, strength and resilience. Your first step is to accept responsibility, then to identify the critical components of your individuality and identity.

Do you feel pressure to “have it all together”? You might feel stuck personally or professionally but unsure how to make a move forward out of fear, self-doubt, or shame. With the stress of today's world, I help people take a closer look at what no longer serves them and how to build the life and relationships you want. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and more. I also have a passion for men’s mental health as I have found that men can struggle to find a place where they feel heard, understood, and validated without judgment; and I work to cultivate a safe and supportive space for all.

"Relationships and how we communicate are the two most important things in our lives." -- I am totally committed to improving communication and relationships. -- I believe communication is often more at the core of quality relationships than digging into our deep, dark, past issues. -- Research and years of my own experience clearly show that effective therapy is not a set of skills or techniques, but a way of being. Our here & now experience is the fuel of therapy. One more tidbit: Therapists are like shoes. You have to try some on before you find one that fits.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
