Finding the right therapist for you can feel daunting! You might wonder if it's possible for someone to really get you & if opening up is worth the risk. I connect well with those who feel set apart from those around them or have difficulty connecting with others. We come to know & understand ourselves in the context of relationships. Without authentic connections, we can end up feeling really stuck - disconnected from those around us & from ourselves. Through the experience of being with another person in a safe & accepting space, the therapeutic relationship offers a unique & meaningful opportunity for self-discovery & healing.

You’re tired of doing the same thing over and over and finding yourself in the same situation. You know that you’re smarter than this! You beat yourself up for making the same mistakes again and again. You know the answers --- love yourself, say no, check in with yourself --- but you can’t seem to translate that into day to day. You desperately want to find peace in your life, and in your relationships. You want to be fully yourself, to be whole and happy, to stand tall and walk in your strength. You know you’re good and kind and trustworthy and yet you still question yourself. Stop doubting yourself. Let's do this together!

Do you struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt or low self-esteem? Do you find yourself avoiding social engagements or so preoccupied with excessive worrying? Finding ways to navigate these difficult feelings can help you get back on track. I use a psychodynamic approach and CBT that focuses on uncovering patterns of behavior and ways of relating to ourselves and others that are often outside of our awareness. I also consider how our past impacts who we are today. Through acceptance and empathy, we will establish a trusting therapeutic relationship and work together toward your personal growth and self-discovery.

Hi! Thanks for considering me as your therapist. Whether you are struggling with a past trauma or current relationship, I have more than 30 years of helping people learn to live the best life possible. Areas of expertise: cult recovery (religious, other); ACA, PTSD, addictions, and narcissistic relationships, grief and loss. All of us hit speed bumps -- sometimes mountains -- that keep us from moving forward. Our beliefs about how life works can block happiness. We can't always change what's happening, but we can change our perception of it. I work exclusively online. See my web site: www.beaarmstrong.com

I am passionate about helping COUPLES reconnect, stop ineffective communication patterns, heal emotional wounds and navigate mismatched values and desires. I also focus on NEURODIVERSE COUPLES who may be facing some unique challenges due to their different neurology. It is important to view a partnership through this biological lens as opposed to focusing on external conflicts only. I believe that any couple deserves the chance to rebuild their relationship and to both give and receive love. I have observed that with appropriate guidance, people have the inner resources they need to transform: internally and in relationship.

We all feel lost from time to time, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve been through my own therapy as a young adult when I was stuck in a bout of anxiety and panic attacks due to childhood trauma. Throughout my years of working with traumatized individuals, I learned first-hand about how childhood trauma can have a strong impact on adulthood. I can help you address unresolved trauma, in order for you to find passion, connection, and purpose in your life.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Challenges in life are inevitable and at times, there are challenges that seem larger than our ability to manage them. Issues such as depression, anxiety; healing from previous trauma, and abuse are areas that can grip us and prevent us from living our best lives.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
