I help identify values, illuminate barriers interfering with living a fulfilling life, such as mental health symptoms, substance or alcohol use /abuse, or intra/inter-personal issues, and then create effective goals to begin making meaningful change.
Is there something stopping you from living a fulfilling and valued life? You likely have some thoughts about what these barriers (something’s) are, and yet, navigating around them has been to no avail. Powerful emotional experiences, and or, old behavioral patterns can be unrelenting, new ones can be scary, or appear too far off in the distance to effect meaningful change, and still you are motivated to try something new such that value, meaning, or an improvement in your quality of life is returned.

Are you struggling with substances but feel “rehab” isn’t right for you? You don’t need to leave your job or family for a month to find the help you need. Addiction is tough: that compulsion to go back and do the same thing over and over, even though you know it's destroying your life... You feel fear, anxiety, failure, worthlessness, humiliation, contempt... You've tried to break the 'habit', get your control back, but just when you start feeling some success you stumble, and you're back in the same hole again. Breaking your substance abuse alone is not as simple as it sounds. Counseling may be more effective for you than rehab.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to flourish in life while others continually struggle or why one person responds differently than another to the same circumstances? Because our internal world is invisible, most of us don’t realize the impact it has on our moods, our perceptions and our lives. We find ourselves reacting to life. We may try to regain control by attempting to manage the external world and when we do, we experience varying amounts of stress. If you are searching for answers on how you can improve the quality of your life, please call me for a free consultation.

"You are not broken. You are breaking through." Do you feel like no one understands you or can truly help you the way you need? There are times that our perceptions of life situations differs from those around us, causing us to feel unheard or unsupported. These are the times we need support the most. My passion for helping others led me to become a therapist. I believe that every individual has magnificent inner resources that need support in coming to light. My goal as your therapist is to make you feel empowered to create the best life for yourself.

I currently have immediate openings for both telehealth and in-person! I provide a safe, non-judgmental space to explore what's going on in your life, including uncomfortable emotions, relationship issues, and past experiences. I am empathic and open-minded, allowing each person to share their unique self in therapy. Therapy can be challenging and emotional, and together we can set goals that move you towards healing and self-improvement. I take a holistic approach to therapy, with an emphasis on your biological needs (exercise, sleep, nutrition, physical illness, etc). Therapy may be short-term or long-term.

Life changes constantly! Even with "good" change, we have a grief response! I work well with those experiencing sadness, worry and/or grief. I see Individuals and Couples who are in a "State of Adjustment" and having some difficulty. It may be an adjustment to the loss of a loved one through death or divorce, to hearing a painful truth, to a betrayal or to our "ideal" not being met. Couples, especially those with children, experience great adjustments in their relationship to their own Being as well as to each other. I work collaboratively and with great sensitivity.

ATTENTION PROFESSIONALS STRUGGLING WITH HIGH ANXIETY AND/OR RELATIONSHIP ISSUES (AT WORK OR HOME): You really want to talk with someone, but you're not sure who to trust. When you describe tough challenges at work or with your family, you want someone who GETS IT. The last thing you need is to discover that your counselor has too little experience to bring any new solutions to the table. You're looking for someone who's "BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT." Someone who inspires confidence with the way they approach their work, and someone who's already solved the problems you're dealing with.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
