Parents, are you worried that your
teen
or young adult may be stressed or depressed? Are they refusing to communicate with you, staying up real late at night, becoming defiant and or have excessive use of gaming or social media? Has social distancing caused them to isolate from friends and family and sleep all day? Have they seemed to have lost all motivation and have no structure to their daily life? My name is Tametra and I am the founder of Jacobs Ladder Therapies. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 15 years experience working with teens and young adults.

Trouble communicating with your
teen
? Unable to break the cycle of arguments with your partner? Overwhelmed and not sure why? Our interactions with the world are shaped by our families and the broader cultures that surround us as we grow up. As an adult, you might find that those patterns no longer work for you, or get in the way of your having fulfilling relationships with your spouse or children.

I specialize in parenting,
teen
and parent conflict, and child and
adolescent
therapy.
Relationships make life meaningful, and when they are not going well, they can impact our outlook on life by causing us pain and self-doubt. Life changes and challenges can intensify these difficulties. Therapy can provide a safe place to understand yourself better, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and learn strategies to change. It takes strength and courage to ask for help, so safety and trust are essential to effective therapy.

I have worked extensively with
adolescent
and young adults in transitions.
I am a licensed psychologist who has over 18 years experience working with adolescents and adults. Therapy is a collaborative process between therapist and client. I strive to create a supportive environment in which clients can feel safe to explore their feelings and address barriers that are interfering with their quality of life. I draw from a variety of treatment approaches that match your own personal needs and goals. I believe our thoughts influence our feelings and ultimately our behavior so I also work from a cognitive behavioral approach.

I am here to help! I not only provide individual therapy for your
teen
, but I also provide parent coaching as well.
With over 20 years of almost exclusively working with SF Bay Area teens and their families (and a mother of two teenagers),-I have a solid understanding of the issues adolescents face, the struggles they encounter, and the mental health problems that are so very prevalent for them today. Depression and anxiety are at all all time high for teens and understanding the why isn't always so clear. My clients are facing a myriad of concerns - school refusal, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, substance use, social struggles, disordered eating, behavioral issues, just to name a few. One in thing is common is that they are all hurting,

In addition, my 28 year work history as an on-campus counselor at Bay Area elementary, middle and high schools, an MFT intern supervisor, an adjunct professor of psychology, as well as my position as a Clinical Director at the
Teen
and Family Counseling Center, have all helped to round out my clinical experience.
My goal is to provide clients with a safe place to talk, sort through feelings and explore issues that may be affecting their mood, behavior, motivation or relationships. Using a combination of supportive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, my work is about supporting clients while looking at the sources of distress and helping them to improve their reactions, make changes, and cope with life and others in a healthier way. I work with individuals, couples, and older teens with any issue they are struggling with either individually or as a family.

I am trained in EMDR, which is a powerful tool for processing trauma and a unique offering for the
teen
and young adult population (as many EMDR providers only support adults).
Carl Jung said "The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you really are" and this is something I am passionate about: helping my clients uncover who they truly are and live the lives that they deserve. I primarily work with children, teens and young adults and enjoy creating unique interventions based on upon their interests and goals. Using talk, art and play I help clients explore their experiences with anxiety, depression, school challenges, and trauma. Having previously worked in school settings I have witnessed first hand how important mental health counseling is for children, teens and young adults.

In addition, I feel it is vital that parents can also trust me as we partner together to support their child/
teen
.
I believe children and teens can learn, grow, and thrive when they have coping skills, feel empowered, and practice self-care. My goal is to encourage youth to learn who they are and how to advocate for their unique needs. I specialize in working with neurodiverse, gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) youth and their families. I encourage youth to use their strengths and interests in order to grow, heal, and cope. Building self-awareness, such as understanding their own sensory processing and asynchronous development, is an important part of my work with youth.

Feeling anxious, sad, or lonely? Notice your
teenager
is irritable, unmotivated, or depressed? It's natural to wonder why you or your
teenager
are experiencing these emotions when all we desire is happiness and inner peace. Life can be a whirlwind of stress and emotions, both positive and negative. However, it's important to remember these emotions don't have to dominate your life or your family's life indefinitely, and you don't have to tackle them alone. As human beings, we are wired to experience emotions, but it's how we navigate and respond to them that truly shapes our well-being.

I am a child therapist that specializes in helping children and
teen
with anxiety and trauma heal and thrive. If your child struggles with anxiety, shutting down, or tantrums, I get it. I understand how parenting children with anxiety is draining, and tiring. You want to help your child but you feel like you don’t have the proper tools or support. Here, I can help your child heal and grow through the power of play. As a Play Therapist, I use a child-centered approach that allows children to express themselves in their own unique way, using the language of play.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
