There is a crisis of meaning and purpose in our society and far too few communities of support to guide us through the difficulties of modern life. I work with clients using psychodynamic, interpersonal and mindfulness-based approaches to help people move from lives of loneliness and alienation to lives of connection and purpose. Creating a safe and nurturing relationship with my clients is of primary importance in my work.

I tend to work well with female-identified and nonbinary folks who have had difficult relationships with their sense of self and with others, endurance athletes and ultrarunners who have had a major setback or injury, folks who have a strained relationship with their body, and folks in their 20s to 40s who are ready to take an honest look at their dating and drinking habits, their sexuality, or how they envision the next move in their career or education. I help folks find a sense of peace from the nagging feeling of being disconnected from their sense of self and from those around them.

Life is filled with challenging transitions, relationships, and experiences. One of my favorite sayings is – nothing in this life worth having comes easy. I use it, myself, as a reminder and motivator when things get hard. Because they do, and that’s okay! It is okay to be stressed, frustrated, sad, angry, excited, and any other emotion you feel. The challenge comes when those emotions lead to unfortunate circumstances. I believe the things we want will test us before conceding and opening the door to success and personal fulfillment. Resilience is a core trait to develop and can provide everyone with the opportunity for happiness.

I celebrate clients of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as gender identities and sexual orientations, and am kink and nonmonogamy positive. I work within a liberatory, decolonial lens which takes into account not only how our early relational experiences shape us, but how the cultural and economic environments we inhabit influence us as well. If you are coming to therapy as a couple or family I will support you in paying attention to the nonverbal behaviors that may be contributing to painful dynamics of disconnection.

Sports Performance Therapists
How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualisation, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.
How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.
How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.
What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
