I also have extensive experience working with
men's issues
, including addressing concerns related to masculinity and gender roles, issues of identity, and learning to better experience and express a full range of emotions in a healthy way; for many men, this also means redefining their relationship with anger.
I provide psychotherapy for individual adults and adolescents, offering therapeutic support and interventions which are tailored to the unique needs and personalities of those whom I am fortunate to serve. Working from a disciplined eclectic perspective, I collaborate with my patients to discover new and more helpful ways to cope with life's challenges and work towards their goals and aspirations. Whether the work is short- or long-term in nature, my approach is grounded in the belief that every person deserves and benefits most from a course of treatment which is individually tailored to their specific strengths and challenges.

men's issues
and substance /recovery.
Psychotherapy offers emotional and psychological space for change. It is an opportunity to decode what is not working and with therapeutic guidance provide clients with a scaffolding to try out new thinking and ways of feeling. I see psychotherapy as a kind of lab, where clients safely get to try new approaches out, notice what works and what is most effective. My work is about helping clients; whether a problem to be solved, a desired behavioral change, or finding meaning during a life challenging experience. I encourage individuals to contact me and explore that change. I am here to help.

My specialties include complex trauma, childhood abuse/neglect, healing from narcissistic/abusive relationships, codependency and relationship problems, substance use disorders, masculinity and
men's issues
, couples therapy, and working with Asian American/minority issues such as family conflict, intergenerational trauma, cultural identity & racism.
Though I work with most issues, I specialize in helping people recover from complex trauma. People with narcissistic, abusive, or neglectful parents or partners sometimes develop issues with trusting themselves, have difficulty maintaining close relationships, struggle with an inner critic, vacillate often between depression and anxiety, lack a solid sense of identity, or feel a sense of emptiness when their lives seem great on paper. Sometimes that trauma can even become part of one's identity - I work with clients to build insight, boundaries, self-compassion, and acceptance to free themselves from it & live more fulfilling lives.

As a licensed therapist based in San Francisco, I help individuals, couples, and families dive beneath the surface-level issues to discover the underlying causes of their distress. I work with men and women who are seemingly successful and happy but deep down inside feel lost, alone, even if they are in a relationship, and struggle to be present in life or often feel like they don't belong. I treat anxiety and depression through examining unconscious cognitive distortions and repetitive coping mechanisms as well as deep-rooted inner conflicts, insecurity, guilt, shame, family of origin and childhood trauma that manifest in perpetuating self-doubt, career dissatisfactions, and relationship/intimacy difficulties. Clients with prior therapy experiences often report making progress in our initial work together.

Welcome, glad you're here. Let's be honest, life often is messy and can feel like a struggle. And yet, what if beneath trauma, disappointments, frustrations, or seemingly poor life choices lie seeds of growth that just need some watering? What if you already contain the ingredients essential for thriving? Might your relationships as well? In my view therapy provides a sacred like opportunity where one is offered a chance to experience renewed vitality, meaning, and an invigorated sense of mind, body, spirit, and soul. A space where the genius in you or perhaps the potentials lying in relationships and parenting roles can emerge.

Sometimes who we think we are "supposed" to be and who we are in our truth don't always line up causing anxiety, depression, conflict in relationships and career. Recognizing and allowing the true self to emerge is empowering and challenging. I work collaboratively with you to discover this truth and along the way build some skills and strategies to support us along the journey - uncovering your strengths, your desires and your self. We will chat, move, breathe, write maybe even dance. The body is the anchor and sometimes we forget how wise and rich it is. We will see if we can rediscover this truth. I think we can.

A rapidly growing number of men lose everything because they fail to make healthy choices about sexual behavior. Most are good people who made poor decisions because they push the limits of acceptable sexual behavior. Our goal is to assist you in developing healthy lifestyles, while at the same time preventing serious consequences to you and others. Sexual behavior does not need to be "normal," but it must be ethical and not harmful. Think about it! Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
