We all experience some level of depression, anxiety and low self esteem at some point in our lives. It can feel lonely and isolating. It affects our desires and aliveness, our ability to feel joy, fulfillment, and connection. We are craving to be understood and seen and have more clarity about our place in the world. We crave to find peace, self love and love from others. Healing starts with our relationship, client and therapist. Together we build a safe and brave space to meet the fears, to rediscover your intuition and creativity and to understand your unique experience, needs and wants.

So. No one told you life was gonna be this way. Do you feel alone—like nobody sees your unique brand of awesomeness? Do you feel scared—like adulting comes with a lot of unforeseen challenges that you don't know how to handle? Do you feel frustrated with your relationships—like they're falling way short of how great you wish they were?

I have 10+ years of experience practicing Gestalt Therapy: a blend of self exploration, body awareness, and creative ways to integrate fragmented parts of ourselves.
Because I have personal life experience in parenting, activism, dance, and working in hospitality and tech (from start-ups to multinational corporations), I can relate to people in many walks of life. I am multi-lingual, a child of immigrants, and have lived abroad. I'm also an adjunct professor and supervisor at CIIS.

Drawing from Gestalt Therapy, I take a holistic approach, helping individuals build awareness and make meaningful choices that lead to change and growth.
In working with couples, I am dedicated to helping partners deepen their connection and create more fulfilling relationships. It’s easy to get stuck in patterns that leave both people feeling distant or misunderstood. Together, we explore these dynamics, uncover the emotions beneath them, and foster clearer, more compassionate communication.

With a background working in tech and startups in San Francisco, I offer a space for those who look like they have it all together on the outside, but feel anxious and disconnected on the inside to explore, heal and reconnect with themselves. Maybe you are navigating burnout in a high-pressure career, processing shifts in your identify and relationship as a new parent, or seeking tools to connect more deeply with yourself or your partner and are searching for a place where you don't have to perform or prove yourself, just show up as you are.

People come to therapy with me because their relationships aren't working, or because past trauma is haunting them and keeping them from living a full life. Maybe you are having trouble sleeping, working, or something just seems... off. I am passionate about long term, contemporary, psychoanalytic and relational therapy. "Relational" means we look at your relationships and our relationship to figure out where you are stuck and help you move through it. I also incorporate mindfulness, grounding exercises, and somatic resourcing to help you stay within your window of tolerance and feel engaged in the present moment

Hello! My name is Annu, and I am a therapist in San Francisco (and online). I work with immigrants and adult-children of immigrants....also known as Third Culture Kids (TCK) or First Generation Americans. I work with multi-cultural and multi-racial couples, many of whom are people of color. I work with successful, career-driven achievers. I belong to each of these demographics - my parents immigrated to the US in 1971, and I worked in the corporate world for nearly 2 decades, climbing the corporate ladder rapidly before pivoting my career by going back to school to study counseling psychology. I work virtually via Zoom or phone.

It can be so easy to take on responsibilities that are not ours and blame ourselves for things that were out of our control. In therapy, my hope is to offer a space to hear your story and move at a pace that feels safe for you. I welcome conversations of all sorts but am especially interested in grief, anxiety, self-compassion, the end of life, meaning and purpose, complex trauma, and PTSD. In relationships, I support clients in conflict resolution and communication, rebuilding trust and reconnection, evaluating relationship structures, and gaining a deeper understanding of one another.

Do you feel like you aren't good enough? Do you struggle with issues of self esteem or self worth? Do you want to explore mind-body connection & the way stress or emotional pain lives in our bodies? If these are themes for you or in your relationships, then perhaps we might work well together. I center my work around self compassion. Only from a place of self kindness can we feel grounded within ourselves to develop a compassionate relationship with others around us. I use mindfulness and somatic (body oriented) work in order to help us connect deeper with our self, our inner knowing and to be able to cultivate trust with ourselves.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
