I have worked successfully with people who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and people who have had difficulty in relationships.
I like to work with a combination of talk therapy and other more holistic modalities. I encourage my clients to speak of their dreams, their bodies and their spiritual experiences through guided meditations, sensory awareness exercises and expressive arts. We work to develop awareness of the meaningful story behind the suffering.

People often ask how I see therapy. I see it as a space to get an awareness of all that you're capable of, and also to build the ability to deal with the feelings that come up in the midst of it all. Questions I often hear from folks about therapy: When is the right time? What can it help me with? How do I find the right therapist? I see therapy as a process where we work to change our internal sense of ourselves. The goal is to engage with the world with more joy. It's a time when we can look at our beliefs about ourselves and the world, then find and keep ones that support us in becoming the person we yearn to be.

I have experience treating a wide range of issues (depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, behavior problems, substance abuse, etc).
“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.” ― Bessel A. van der Kolk. My approach to treatment helps people identify the core issues that have been avoided and pushed aside in an emotionally safe environment. Through the process of consciousness raising and self exploration, lasting changes in thought patterns are made, and overall life improvement occurs. I work with people of all ages and have a wealth of experience working with teens and young adults.

My specialty areas are substance abuse, couples issues, eating disorders, life coaching, bariatric surgery issues, infertility/adoption, helping caregivers cope with dealing with a loved one's chronic illness.
My focus is to develop a relationship with the client. This is called the two person model which is different than the old fashion practice where the doctor is one up and the client is one down. Rather, the two person model attempts to understand the client through questions and mutual discussion. I am not a silent therapist. I give feedback and remain fully engaged with the patient. Together we build a rapport. I adhere to a humanistic approach.

My clients come from backgrounds where they weren’t taught healthy relationship skills, and they realize they're stuck in patterns they want to change, such as self-judgment or blame, self-sabotage, avoidance, relational anxiety, codependence, or abuse.
In therapy, I want to know the patterns. I take time to understand family background, relationships and community, and life events. I believe all behavior serves a purpose, and we discover how our behaviors both serve and do not serve us. I ask thoughtful questions, identify patterns, and offer feedback to help change what's not working for you.

My areas of focus include anxiety, depression, developmental trauma, identity exploration, survivors of intimate partner abuse, life transitions, and relationship issues.
I work from contemporary psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, and relational approaches. I believe that deeper, sustained healing comes from exploring the root causes of suffering and untangling the patterns that keep individuals stuck. Although the process of therapy may feel difficult at moments, it is also often filled with creativity, relief, and discovery.

I have specialized experience working with Intimate partner violence, relationships, addiction and trauma.
Talking with a therapist provides a safe place to talk about painful thoughts, feelings and stressors. You may be feeling sad, angry, anxious or stuck. You may be unable to control negative thoughts, unhealthy behaviors, engaging in unhealthy relationships or repeating destructive patterns. You may be distressed from memories related to traumatic events. It takes courage to talk to another person about these undesirable and distressing parts of your life. I offer a safe space to talk and be listened to. When you are ready, I’d like to help you feel better about yourself, your relationships and your life.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
