You want to stop doubting yourself, but you don’t know how. You are easily overwhelmed but you don’t know why. You may have “always been this way” but now you are wondering if there is something you are missing. Life seems easy for others, so why not for you? I’m here to help. Chances are, you grapple with anxiety, rumination and indecision. You are most likely very sensitive, even if you don’t always know what you are feeling. You might also be a perfectionist. Or a procrastinator. Or both! That thing you sense you are missing? It's self-trust. And it can be cultivated. How? By working on your relationship - with yourself.

My clients are women and LGBTQIA+ folks seeking a therapy space where they can show up and be seen as their authentic selves. Many have a history of trauma, or have experienced interpersonal violence such as domestic abuse or sexual assault. Others are working to manage chronic stress and anxiety at work or at home. What would you do if you had the courage to take risks and get vulnerable in your personal or professional life? Let's find out together. As professional women, we often cope with uncertainty and "impostor syndrome" by trying to perfect ourselves and outperform our peers. And we can struggle with intense guilt and shame when it feels like we're falling short. More often than not, this cycle creates additional barriers to our own success and happiness. Sometimes we double down; other times we end up demoralized or paralyzed. Either way, we get stuck.

We all have things that we are uniquely suited to do, innate talents that when developed fulfill our sense of purpose in life. Perhaps you had to bury that purpose long ago. No matter what you've been through or how old you are, transformation is possible. Therapy with me is about figuring out what you truly want to do and overcoming the internal and external obstacles to doing it.

I offer you an empathetic, direct, and practical presence in your journey towards healing. After becoming a physician (I am a licensed Obstetrician Gynecologist), I discovered another calling of mine is working with people and their emotions. As a therapist who is also a physician, I bring knowledge and wisdom of medicine, the body, and the mind-body connection. With this background, I offer you a unique, experienced, and well-rounded therapist. (For safety reasons, I am currently only offering online therapy sessions.)

Chronic pain doesn't just hurt physically. It touches every aspect of our lives, from the personal to the professional. Our relationships, our work, our hobbies and interests, and even our basic human needs can end up on the back burner while we struggle to manage our pain symptoms. Over time, our lives feel like they're shrinking, as pain robs us of the things that matter most. It's no surprise that chronic pain sufferers end up experiencing anxiety, depression, substance use issues, and insomnia up to four times the rate of people who are pain free.

I tend to work well with female-identified and nonbinary folks who have had difficult relationships with their sense of self and with others, endurance athletes and ultrarunners who have had a major setback or injury, folks who have a strained relationship with their body, and folks in their 20s to 40s who are ready to take an honest look at their dating and drinking habits, their sexuality, or how they envision the next move in their career or education. I help folks find a sense of peace from the nagging feeling of being disconnected from their sense of self and from those around them.

Our mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. We need to look at the context of our past, our relationships, and the world around us to be able to understand ourselves and the challenges we face. Therapy isn’t easy — but it doesn’t have to be joyless. If you’re looking for a therapist who can delve into the dark stuff with both the compassionate support and the sense of humor that it deserves, you’ve come to the right place. I work with women and LGBTQ+ folks on a range of issues, from managing depression and anxiety, to improving self-esteem, to healing from a past trauma or loss. Many of my clients have experienced violence in an intimate relationship, and I have specialized training to support survivors of domestic violence so that they can move forward in their lives and their relationships with others.

My psychotherapy practice focuses on women's mental health, with an eye towards the multiple, and often competing, roles that we navigate throughout a lifetime. My approach is to listen attentively for what is needed so that we can work together to create your experience. Rather than "cure" you, I will support you with safety and warmth and offer you the tools to lead your life with intention, dignity and self-determination. My focus includes anxiety and depression, reproductive, intergenerational and complex trauma, familial relationships as well as racial & cultural identity.

In the fast-paced, hyper-competitive Bay Area, it can be challenging to balance all of the roles that we assume. Work, school, money, technology, and relationship stressors can leave us feeling depleted. Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and career dissatisfaction are some of the ways stressors may manifest. My aim is to support and help to empower you to improve your life by engaging in the life that you want to lead. This may result in increased effectiveness, happiness, and reduced suffering in all of your roles.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
