I work with people who face challenges that often arise but are not exclusive to the second half of life such as: the trauma of illness & death , caring for aging parents, loss of satisfaction or sense of meaning in relationships and work, loss of a job, and/or loneliness. I also work with folks suffering from love addiction or love avoidance. These challenges can often be baffling and carry symptoms such as depression, fear and anxiety. The rational mind may understand what is going on but somehow the emotional and physical body can't always take solace in rational solutions.

I work best with the misfits: geeks & nerds, punks, skaters, artists, musicians, writers, and activists. . . those who "rage against the dying of the light." My area of expertise consists in helping with difficulties in relationships. Such difficulties include finding and sustaining healthy intimacy, healing from a painful break-up or divorce, school-related problems, recovering from major loss , and growing up in difficult circumstances. I am particularly suited to helping those who have cultivated their intellects and creativity but would now like to develop a greater awareness of their emotional world.

If you have made your way to this page, you are probably struggling with a "relationship problem"--either with someone else, or with yourself. This is likely causing you significant emotional pain. Your predicament may have been triggered by a recent event, such as loss or trauma, or may have lingered and festered for years. Your symptoms may vary--you may experience persistent discontent, loneliness, emptiness...; have difficulty finding or sustaining a relationship, or have a spouse who wants you to get "fixed".You may be battling addiction or a destructive behavior that is thwarting your life, but impossible to give up, despite endless attempts.

I can also help you feel relief from anxiety, stress, grief , existential issues and life transitions, depression or the effects of trauma.
We are hard wired for connection to others. Relationships are often some of the most important aspects of our lives, which is why this emotional investment can at times result in tension, frustration or noticing similar patterns that we just can't shake. Are you struggling in your current relationship? Are you wondering why you can't start or keep a relationship? Feeling pressure to be in one? Wondering why you keep choosing the same type of person? Therapy is a great place to explore this. I have a deep understanding of how our past affects our present. Let's unpack the patterns together.

I specialize in working with men approaching or in mid-life (30’s, 40’s, 50’s) who need help with work, relational and personal challenges. Adapting to a transition or preparing to make one, can lead to feeling stuck, anxious, depressed or full of anger. Perhaps you’re in a relationship that is more characterized by conflict rather than love and satisfying sex. Maybe you’re facing loss , feeling disconnected or overwhelmed by your feelings. These experiences can lead to addiction, isolation and compulsive behaviors. I’ve worked with these issues and I can help you.

Whether you are experiencing grief , depression, anxiety, loss of motivation, recovering from trauma, dealing with health issues, struggling with substance use or simply want to feel more fully integrated, I am honored to be a part of that journey.
I cannot move mountains for you, but I can help you climb. Facing fears, healing from loss , finding meaning and joy - these are the inevitable tasks of life. Therapy may be your first step or your last resort. Often people avoid it all together because they believe their pain is too great, worry they will be judged or that their situation is too complicated. Some people believe they should solve problems on their own or only with family and friends. However, while family and friends may want the best for us, they often come with opinions or past hurts. Sometimes it helps to have a safe space outside your daily experience.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
