I have specialized training in PREPARE/ENRICH for pre-marital couples as well as the Gottman Method , Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, CBT, and DBT.
My role as a therapist is to help you reach your potential. I work with individuals and couples who want to feel more connected and fulfilled in their relationships. Identifying these patterns and developing strategies to overcome them can empower you to get unstuck and move toward your goals. I support couples to gain the insight and skills to overcome conflict, improve communication and find connection. I help individuals grow in awareness, heal from the past and conquer the barriers keeping them from the life they want.

I am trained in CBT, EMDR, Gottman method , & Attachment Based Therapy.
My therapeutic approach mainly focuses on helping my clients identify their strengths to help alleviate anxiety, depression, and trauma. I am a firm believer that our childhood experiences contribute to our beliefs, behavioral patterns, and selecting a romantic partner. Therapy is a process! To allow ourselves to be intimate and vulnerable with someone about our experiences and trauma can be daunting. As a therapist, it is my goal to help validate, create a safe environment and help understand aspects of lived experiences.

Most people identify their relationships with their partner and family as the most important things in their life. Our society provides significant education about how to be successful in many other important life domains. However, most of us are left on our own to learn how to build successful relationships. I work with individuals and couples using methods of therapy that are based on research about what actually works to strengthen and heal relationships and improve overall well-being.

You may feel as if you are a passive participant in your life longing to be more active and connected while feeling so incredibly stuck. If you find yourself here, perhaps you or your child has been struggling to enjoy things that he or she usually enjoys (having friends over, heading outdoors, reading/watching tv). Their mind might be filled with worries of what others think and they did something wrong and are having difficulties shaking off an interaction. You or your child are wanting to feel more at ease in your relationships while finding yourself in familiar unhelpful patterns.

Many couples work so hard to resolve conflict on thier own and end up getting stuck over and over. Though each couple has hot topics they can often argue over something as simple as the toilet paper roll. They try to resolve repetitive conflicts on their own and get stuck. There are specific tools and perspectives that are key to having a successful relationship. Learning these tools can deepen a relationship and build a foundation for a potential future family.

Something just feels "off". You are exhausted from looping in thoughts and patterns that are no longer serving you. You are overwhelmed by the state of things....the anxiety just won't go away, the grief is too much, the challenge is too big, the relationship is too far gone.... you secretly fear that you don't have what it takes to make the change you desire. Together we will uncover pain, fears and unmet desires that drive the spiral. We will rediscover and utilize your strengths to create a life that reflects your values.

As we change and grow, and get caught up in the daily grind, we forget to tend to our relationships and they can begin to feel burdensome. Part of what I do is normalize that relationships are work. Over time they disappoint us, trigger us, and often serve as mirrors for parts of ourselves we like the least. We start to forget that they bring us joy and purpose and get wrapped up in toxic thought patterns. The neglect breeds contempt and then we feel more disconnected than ever. My passion lies in helping you reconnect with yourself and your loved ones.

Seeking therapy can be the first step on a healing journey and I hope to walk alongside you as you pursue personal growth. I believe that therapy can be a great way to access some of the tools that are already within us but that we may need help employing. I understand the importance of intersectionality as a queer Black woman and therapist and can understand how necessary it is to acknowledge the impact of intersecting identities when working with clients. I use an integrative approach to help clients feel empowered to re-frame their narrative and identify and process complex emotions.

Therapy is a meaningful process to those brave enough to enter into such a vulnerable space. Sometimes we know where we want to go, but we just can't get there because we are standing in our own way. Other times we only know what we know until we learn something different.

My qualifications include: Gottman Method Level 1 & 2 focused solely on fostering love and compassion for couples and Gottman Bringing Baby Home certification.
Road to motherhood can be frustrating and challenging. Perhaps you are thinking about fertility treatments, IVF, IUI, or adoption. Maybe it has been a difficult road with miscarriages, unsuccessful egg retrievals or using a surrogate. It can be an overwhelming place to try to start a family, while encountering road bumps along the way. After the baby comes, we may experience exhaustion, sadness and even even a sense of isolation from our partner, friends and family. Growing a family takes a village.

I am also trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy and may integrate those into our work.
Are you struggling with relationships? Are you having the same fight with your partner over and over? Have you lost the emotional connection you used to have? Intimate relationships touch our deepest relational wounds. That's why we can be overwhelmed with the pain they bring and often, at points, feel like giving up. We can heal those wounds and help each other in that process. The kind of couples therapy I provide combines deep experiential work with teaching, coaching and practicing many specific relational skills that will set you up for success.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
