I emphasize humanistic, person-centered, psychodynamic, narrative therapy, parts work, existential, family systems and mindfulness modalities.
Hello and welcome! I am a bilingual (English/Spanish) psychotherapist that is dedicated to creating an inclusive, authentic, and safe therapeutic experience. Therapy with me focuses on collaborating with individuals and couples seeking to explore their current and past experiences, personal identity, and gain insight into what may no longer be serving them in order to cultivate growth and healing. In addition to working with individuals, I am passionate about collaborating with couples of all kinds to navigate the challenges of communication, stressors, intimacy, and differing experiences that show up in relationships.

Most people identify their relationships with their partner and family as the most important things in their life. Our society provides significant education about how to be successful in many other important life domains. However, most of us are left on our own to learn how to build successful relationships. I work with individuals and couples using methods of therapy that are based on research about what actually works to strengthen and heal relationships and improve overall well-being.

I cannot move mountains for you, but I can help you climb. Facing fears, healing from loss, finding meaning and joy - these are the inevitable tasks of life. Therapy may be your first step or your last resort. Often people avoid it all together because they believe their pain is too great, worry they will be judged or that their situation is too complicated. Some people believe they should solve problems on their own or only with family and friends. However, while family and friends may want the best for us, they often come with opinions or past hurts. Sometimes it helps to have a safe space outside your daily experience.

I founded and directed four different Family Therapy Programs over several decades.
I work with individuals, couples and families. I see my role as helping to alleviate distress (anxiety, fear, vulnerability, depression) and promoting positive change. From the point of first contact I work towards establishing a trusting relationship. I draw upon my extensive experience in psychodynamic theory, family systems therapy, and solution focused therapies to make sure that I gain an accurate understanding of each client individually and in their relationships. I present myself as a problem solver and collaborate with the client(s) in identifying significant problems and establishing goals towards achieving positive changes.

I practice using an integrative approach to therapy, drawing upon art therapy modalities, Internal Family Systems, humanistic, transpersonal/mindfulness practices, and a social-justice orientation of multiculturalism and diversity to inform and provide an empathetic foundation from which the process of growth can flourish.
I know how important relationships are, and how little we are taught about how to do them! I work with women who are feeling disconnected from themselves. Women who are struggling with body image issues, eating disorders, trauma, boundaries and relationship issues. I'm here to help facilitate a relationship between you and all parts of you. I believe there is creativity, reflection and expression inside of everyone and it can be easier to communicate without words. I bring warmth and energy to the room and levity to situations that can sometimes feel overwhelming and heavy.

Working with a supportive psychologist can help you heal your pain, so that you can focus on what matters: children, family , career, and fun!.
I help individuals who are feeling overwhelmed. Do you feel like you should be doing something more, even when you're already doing something? Is your inner voice telling you to do more, be more, or strive harder? Have you felt like you're failing or "broken" or that there aren't people who understand or care about your suffering? In our work together, we will explore ways of developing comfort with the spectrum of emotions. We also work to balance your caregiving responsibilities with your needs, creating space for your most replenished, empowered self.

Because every individual, couple, family , and/or group is unique, I will use a clinical approach that will fit the case the best, or I will follow the preferred theoretical orientation per client's request.
I received my B.A. degree in University of California, Davis, with a major in Psychology, and my M.A. degree from John F. Kennedy University in the Counseling Psychology program. My expertise includes mental health counseling, such as depressive/anxiety disorders, communication, family , intimacy and/or relationship issues for individuals, groups, couples, and families, drug addiction treatment, and gambling addiction. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist , I strongly believe in human potential, and my goal is to help my clients to discover and utilize the tools they have already possessed!

Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, in a rut? Do you or your family have extra challenges because of adoption and pre-adoption history, insecure attachment, trauma, loss, or other complications? For adults and families touched by adoption or trauma, unconditional love and ordinary parenting skills are not always enough to prevent negative behaviors, anxiety, or depression in childhood or later in life. Finding a therapist with special training in these areas can make all the difference.

A combination of CBT, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) are also used in therapy sessions, along with a good sense of humor.
Not your typical psychotherapist...Mary is a Trauma Specialist working with adults who suffer from childhood trauma, PTSD, dissociation, anxiety and depression. In her sessions, Mary helps clients discover how to overcome emotional overload, understand the connection between brain, body and behavior, and tap into the mind's natural ability to heal.

So much of who we are is established early on within our family systems.
I work with people who face challenges that often arise but are not exclusive to the second half of life such as: the trauma of illness & death, caring for aging parents, loss of satisfaction or sense of meaning in relationships and work, loss of a job, and/or loneliness. I also work with folks suffering from love addiction or love avoidance. These challenges can often be baffling and carry symptoms such as depression, fear and anxiety. The rational mind may understand what is going on but somehow the emotional and physical body can't always take solace in rational solutions.

Psychedelic Integration, Addiction/Codependency, Attachment Theory, (Internal) Family Systems, Relationship Conflicts, life transitions, managing work/life balance, professionals in startups, gay couples therapy & LGBT acceptance.
I specialize in attachment theory, addictions& addiction related issues (like codependency). I also enjoy working with premarital couples/couples wanting to strengthen communication skills or rebuild trust within their relationship. Caregivers were the first to teach us how to relate to others. Healthy relationships are often not modeled for us & we wonder why the same troubled patterns repeat. I can help you gain insight into these patterns & work together to have healthier relationships. My goal is to get to know you, establish a strong connection, and provide a safe space to begin your healing journey together.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
