There are many things that draw us to therapy. Some arrive struggling with anxiety, depression , relationship issues, or career uncertainty. Others have difficulty managing  the roller coaster of emotions inherent in the peri- and postpartum experience, while some simply want a space to engage in deeper reflection. Whatever your goals and challenges, I welcome the opportunity to see whether I may be a good fit for your journey.

I treat clients whose daily functioning, self image and way of relating to others has been negatively impacted by anxiety, depression , and various external or situational stressors. Compassion and collaboration are crucial in facilitating healing and creating a functional therapeutic rapport that allows for increasingly greater presence of mind. Education and 15 years of clinical experience underscore my belief that people can feel better as they practice more adaptive thinking and behavior in the present.

We find unique healing in your own path for change, expansion, and self assurance. My best source is your own psychology. We find the tools within you for our work. We will seek clarification for yourself and understanding of others. Good psychotherapy provides not only a safe haven to relieve anxiety, depression , or any psychological pain, but also provides tools for your continuing growth. We add the richness of Jung to insights from psychoanalytically based psychotherapy. Also note that I have an additional practice in support of conscious dying.

I have had particular success with depression , mood regulation, and relationship issues.
I believe that the most important trait that leads to a successful outcome is motivation to learn about oneself. This is the essence of desire- or willingness- to change. I am trained as a psycho-analyst, and try to apply the essential understanding of people that psycho-analytic theory and practice, even when- as is usually the case- the psycho-analtyic method is not indicated, for reasons of time, money, and/or practicality. I work with all kinds of people, but feel that the common denominator is a strong motivation to examine oneself honestly and forthrightly, and to interact emotionally.

I specialize in working with men approaching or in mid-life (30’s, 40’s, 50’s) who need help with work, relational and personal challenges. Adapting to a transition or preparing to make one, can lead to feeling stuck, anxious, depressed or full of anger. Perhaps you’re in a relationship that is more characterized by conflict rather than love and satisfying sex. Maybe you’re facing loss, feeling disconnected or overwhelmed by your feelings. These experiences can lead to addiction, isolation and compulsive behaviors. I’ve worked with these issues and I can help you.

If you have a history of depression and anxiety, you no doubt know what it feels like to move through your day as if trudging through a swamp. At worst, there's little desire or motivation or energy, and then when you do climb out of these moods, you see yourself at some point fall back in. You are likely wanting to learn how to gain some permanent ground, to not have your mood rule you, and to just feel better from day to day. If this is what you are after, then I'd like to help.

Whether you are experiencing grief, depression , anxiety, loss of motivation, recovering from trauma, dealing with health issues, struggling with substance use or simply want to feel more fully integrated, I am honored to be a part of that journey.
I cannot move mountains for you, but I can help you climb. Facing fears, healing from loss, finding meaning and joy - these are the inevitable tasks of life. Therapy may be your first step or your last resort. Often people avoid it all together because they believe their pain is too great, worry they will be judged or that their situation is too complicated. Some people believe they should solve problems on their own or only with family and friends. However, while family and friends may want the best for us, they often come with opinions or past hurts. Sometimes it helps to have a safe space outside your daily experience.

Some common reasons people come into therapy with me are: dissatisfaction with life and relationships, feeling isolated and alone, anger, patterns of co-dependence or care taking, drug abuse and addiction (computers included), desire to find purpose in life and step into power, feelings of self-judgment, anxiety and depression .
Stepping into therapy with someone is an inherently risky process. You are courageously opening up to someone that you don't really know, in hopes of changing, of finding something new, of building a relationship that can create positive change. I respect those who take the leap and I get the importance that you find the right therapist so that you can be understood at a deep level and begin looking more closely at the places in your life that you would like to see change.

I help adults, teens and couples with relationship difficulties, depression , anxiety, work and school stress, and eating disorders.
I engage with my clients deeply, using my years of experience, expertise and intuition, to allow them to experience life more fully. Many people cover over feelings of fear and sadness to protect themselves from hurt. I strive to create a safe environment where trust can be developed, and people can gradually rely less on their need to protect themselves through self-destructive patterns, and more on their healthy, life-enhancing strengths. I help my clients to feel more connected with themselves and to have richer, more meaningful relationships with the people in their lives.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
