My name is Kate Franza, and I am a licensed therapist, providing services in both California and New York. I am originally from New York, where I received my MSW degree from Fordham University. My practice is grounded in my community mental health background, with a focus on LGBTQ issues, anxiety, depression and substance use. My clients experience relationship struggles, trauma, chronic relapse, and many are interested in exploring and understanding their sexuality and gender identity. I use a harm reduction approach and I draw from a range of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive and mindfulness-based skill building.

My name is Megan Elliott, and I am an LMFT. I believe therapy is most successful when a healthy alliance is formed between the therapist and the client. My goal is to create a safe space for the client to bring whatever is most pressing for them and to support them with creating tools to manage the challenges and stressors they may be experiencing. I am trauma-focused on my training, as well as experience with anxiety/panic, and depression. I work primarily with people who have symptoms/issues related to trauma, ranging from anxiety and depression to substance use, to thought and mood disorders.

In addition to specializing in working with families, couples, and teens, I have particular skills in working with issues that are often considered high risk, such as substance use and self-harm.
I know that the search for a therapist can be incredibly challenging, especially when things are feeling most difficult or confusing. I specialize in providing family therapy, couples therapy, and individual therapy with teens and adults, and am often trusted to support people with the most vulnerable aspects of their lives. If it feels like I may be a good fit for you and your family, I am ready to facilitate a process with you that honors your needs and wishes while finding the best path forward.

My general practice welcomes individuals and couples working with many issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, identity and sexuality, trauma, substance use, LGBTI concerns, new parenting, family conflict, and work-life balance issues.
Therapeutic relationships can truly be life changing and transformational. The issues that are leading you to think about therapy can be worked on, leading to increased satisfaction and joy with yourself, improved relationships with others, and enhanced functioning in pursuit of the life you want. I work collaboratively with you to help you develop more flexible responses to resolve conflict. Listening to your unique story with deep curiosity is crucial to our work, but I'm also pro-active and engaged in sharing my thoughts and observations. Kindness and compassion are vital, but so too are active help and feedback.

My adult and couples clients seek me out for many reasons. Some want to make changes in their lives. Others feel weighed down by difficult emotions, relationships, or past experiences. Some just want to better understand themselves and how to find meaning. My work is a collaborative process, rooted in theory and research, that creates meaningful, lasting change. I've helped clients with professional stress, challenging relationships, mood difficulties (anxiety, depression), challenges adjusting to new life stages/change, medical illness, substance use, a desire to build mindfulness skills, or simply feeling “stuck” and uncreative.

I'm a "seasoned" psychologist in practice for 40 years. I enjoy working with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and have always preferred having a "general practice" which allows addressing a wide range of personal concerns. While each individual requires a unique approach; the transformative power of therapy is rooted in the trusting relationship that evolves between you & I. It's the alliance between us which helps you become the person you aspire to be. The work is serious but also allows for having a bit of fun while seeking the most gratifying life to foster a sense of fulfilling purpose for yourself.

I work with individuals who have been harmed by toxic family dynamics and are seeking their authentic self. I want to acknowledge that beginning your journey may be an intimidating prospect. Maybe you don't know what your needs are, don't feel permission to be yourself, or feel worthy of your boundaries. Perhaps you leave family interactions with conflicting feelings of guilt, anger and shame and feel powerless to change things. I'm here to support you as you re-align with your authenticity and self-expression, processing and shedding the stories of who you are that are told by people in your life that have never truly seen you.

People come to therapy when they feel ready. Often they have gained some insight and are consciously seeking a happier, more balanced life. Many people are aware of a need for healing narcissistic abuse from family, partners or in the work environment. The motivation it takes to make that first phone call is a major step towards positive change. My style is interpersonal, supportive, open and communicative. Most people appreciate guidance, direction and practical feedback. I encourage exploration of unconscious repetitive patterns in relationships and making changes wherever possible.

Clients come to me because they struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, feeling lost and being stuck in patterns they don't like. Many experienced childhood trauma that has hurt their sense of self. Others come for support during life transitions or because they are grieving. I work with couples and adult family members who have a fear of conflict and tend to give up what they need in their relationships, and also those who fight easily and find conflict escalates quickly.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
