My primary orientation is
psychodynamic
, with discrete behavioral tools introduced as appropriate.
I tend to see individuals who achieve success in school and in their careers, but retain a chronic and deep-seated feeling that something is missing. Often, these individuals have gotten by on exceptional logic with little sense that there can be more to their existence. They may be more comfortable doing as opposed to being, thinking as opposed to feeling, and helping as opposed to being helped. High standards commonly include high pressure to self-contain, which can cause immense, private suffering. I aim to provide these individuals with a fuller and more compassionate experience of themselves.

In my clinical practice, I emphasize a
psychodynamic
approach to look at your past and present and how that may influence how you make decisions.
I believe in walking with individuals through their life experiences in a non-judgmental manner. I believe people are not a product of life circumstances; therefore, they do not need to live in a self-punishing manner. I believe individuals can process past traumas and issues resulting in a more fulfilling life. Gaining personal insight and personal growth is a strength that will manifest and multiply in relationships. Working with people is my passion, and I believe your past does not define your future.

Most of us want the same thing: to be happy. If you are on this website, you are most likely experiencing some discomfort - mental, physical, emotional - and have realized this truth — that sometimes it's hard to go it alone. You may be facing tenacious challenges like loneliness, illness, ADHD, anxiety, loss, low self-esteem, less-than-satisfying relationships, body/food conflicts, procrastination and parenting issues. If so, having someone who knows the terrain makes for a more successful outcome.

I approach therapy from an integrative standpoint, using evidence-based therapy modalities that best suit the individuals, couples, or groups with whom I am working. I find the exploratory techniques espoused in
Psychodynamic
models to be core to and underpinning a great deal of my practice.
Psychodynamic
work, for me, provides a solid foundation of knowledge on which to base my understanding of my client, and it is the basis from which I tailor subsequent interventions, including the use of alternate models.

For longer-term help, I work from a
psychodynamic
perspective.
I draw on a broad range of approaches to meet my client’s needs. For short term treatment I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. They are particularly helpful for people suffering from stress, life transitions, relationship problems, depression, anxiety (including phobias and performance anxiety), single incident trauma, or other challenging life events to quickly get back on the road to leading a fully functional life.

I have a compassionate and strengths-based approach to therapy. I firmly believe that it is the relationship we build together that empowers you to work towards your goals. While treatment looks different for each person, I integrate techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing,
psychodynamic
theory, and trauma-informed practice into my work. As a child of immigrants, I am particularly interested in working with those who come from immigrant and/or refugee backgrounds where mental health may be stigmatized.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
