I am a strength-based Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist —one who believes we each have the inner resources we need to be successful and happy in our lives. During our life journeys, many of us may need assistance with finding and/or highlighting our inner strengths so we can breakthrough our struggles, whether they be past traumas, family patterns/dynamics, relationship/attachment issues or a simple and current need for change. My hope is to help my clients build on their strengths, pinpoint their patterns, rewrite their stories, and find their way back to the positive aspects of life they deserve to experience.

Aside from working as an addiction counselor, program director, behavioral consultant, family therapist , and lecturer on subjects related to my field, I have also volunteered at homeless shelters and as a tutor for newly immigrated junior high and high school students.
The individuals I work with come from many different backgrounds and lifestyles. Depression, anxiety, alcoholism, addiction, relationships challenges and other issues do not discriminate, but affect all races, religions, lifestyles, education levels, and income brackets. My approach to each individual situation varies based on clients' needs and preferences. I may choose from cognitive behavioral, object-relations, humanistic, transcendental, family systems, or other therapeutic approaches, based upon a client's needs. Couples may be involved in traditional marriage or an alternative lifestyle.

I am especially interested in assisting clients through major life transitions: adolescent to adult, individual to family , parent to empty nest.
My approach is goal-oriented and solution-focused, and I believe that a collaborative approach works best for those seeking guidance for a better balanced, more fulfilling life. My approach to therapy is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps change negative thought patterns, and Interpersonal Therapy, which helps clients discover patterns in their life that have kept them from realizing their full potential.

My own journey has created an interest in womens', cross-cultural, immigrant, and minority issues - in personal, couples, and family context.
I believe therapy is a place where one can get unconditional support to find one's true self, and find guidance to blossom to one's full capacity. Most of us struggle, as we stray from our original path, and our inner compass informs us of this. Therapy offers a sanctuary, where you can honestly face and better understand how you struggle, and how you can more fully connect with yourself and others. We do this by talking, feeling, and sensing through your experience, in a safe, supportive environment. It is based on trust and respect. This is a vulnerable, challenging and deeply rewarding process.

Becoming our most alive and authentic self is the goal of psychotherapy. If you are like many of the people that I work with, you have felt that being yourself wasn't accepted or valued in relationships, your family , or the world in general. In therapy, you have the opportunity to non-judgmentally challenge and change these learned beliefs and grow into your true self. I am especially interested in working with couples, relationship problems, anxiety, trauma, sex and sexuality, and LGBTQ.

Therapy is the most effective through collaboration. In treatment, I strive to build a therapeutic alliance filled with trust and empathy, which ultimately paves the path to healing, growth, and insight. Through my years of experience working with individuals, children, and families I have been trained in many therapeutic modalities such as CBT, Solution-focused Therapy, mindfulness, and family systems. I now use these different modalities based on each person’s personal needs and goals. The main question is always, what do you want to get out of therapy?

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
