I specialize in attachment theory, addictions& addiction related issues (like codependency). I also enjoy working with premarital couples/couples wanting to strengthen communication skills or rebuild trust within their relationship. Caregivers were the first to teach us how to relate to others. Healthy relationships are often not modeled for us & we wonder why the same troubled patterns repeat. I can help you gain insight into these patterns & work together to have healthier relationships. My goal is to get to know you, establish a strong connection, and provide a safe space to begin your healing journey together.

Hello! I'm Dr. G - I believe therapy is transformative. That being said, therapy is not “one size fits all,” and finding what works for you is a critical part of the process. My personal style combines empathy and trust, with understanding and some humor. Please reach out if you have any questions about therapy, mental health, or my practice.

Do you have pride in coming from tough circumstances before finding your way out? Accomplishment came out of your hard work and survival skills. To your surprise, you didn't didn't leave the past behind and find real contentment or successful relationships the way you wanted. Lack of trust in the world and others is still there. The ability to know your needs (um, I have needs?) and stay connected to yourself (ahem, feelings) is shot. Outwardly you're capable, though privately feel sensitive and alone. I help clients see how their background impacts how they relate to themselves and others.

Most of us want the same thing: to be happy. If you are on this website, you are most likely experiencing some discomfort - mental, physical, emotional - and have realized this truth — that sometimes it's hard to go it alone. You may be facing tenacious challenges like loneliness, illness, ADHD, anxiety, loss, low self-esteem, less-than-satisfying relationships, body/food conflicts, procrastination and parenting issues. If so, having someone who knows the terrain makes for a more successful outcome.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just going through the motions without much joy? Have you been trying to help yourself, but only finding superficial relief? Are you ready to delve into what’s really bothering you - to name it clearly, understand why it’s happening, and work toward lasting change? Often when we examine symptoms or responses that are causing us distress, we discover that they actually serve important functions. From this perspective, we can develop a kinder, more balanced internal dialogue and focus less on protecting ourselves from pain and more on living a full, authentic life.

I have great compassion for the human struggle and I don't want you to feel alone with it.... It's far easier with another person who cares and understands. I've spent my whole life studying psychology: Formally, at Stanford (BA), at UC Berkeley (MA, PhD), and ongoing Continuing Education; informally, from colleagues, clients, and 20+ years in private practice. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life. I'm open, empathic, authentic, interested and interactive. I like helping people with relationship difficulties, life transitions, anxiety, grief, self-criticism, social inhibitions, and emotional trauma, abuse, or neglect.

My focus is to develop a relationship with the client. This is called the two person model which is different than the old fashion practice where the doctor is one up and the client is one down. Rather, the two person model attempts to understand the client through questions and mutual discussion. I am not a silent therapist. I give feedback and remain fully engaged with the patient. Together we build a rapport. I adhere to a humanistic approach.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
