My experiences working within the realm of Reproductive Medicine has given me the opportunity an advocate for the screening and treatment of
perinatal
and post partum mood and anxiety disorders.
"Perhaps strength doesn't reside in having never been broken but in the courage required to grow in the broken places" I believe that pursuing and seeking out help through therapy is an act of bravery. It is my privilege as a therapist to help guide individuals through difficult times in order to help them find meaning and resilience. My experience as both a nurse and a therapist gives me a unique open-minded perspective in empathetically addressing issues for clients in both short and long-term therapy.

I'm also passionate about helping those struggling with infertility, dealing with
pregnancy
loss/
miscarriage
, or with
postpartum
depression/anxiety.
You're struggling more than you'd like to admit. Being a woman in today's society means you "should" do it all and have it all, but at what cost? You're unsure of who you are and question what you want out of life. Often times you're overwhelmed, tired, and feel defeated. Juggling school/work, relationships, finances, family obligations, and parenthood are taking a toll on you and something has to give. You want to build your self-esteem, set boundaries in relationships, establish personal goals, and feel secure in who you are becoming. That's where I come in.

I understand that the road to parenthood does not always go as planned. It may include difficulty trying to conceive,
pregnancy
and/or birth complications,
pregnancy
loss, or rough
postpartum
periods. It can bring up some unexpected feelings like crying frequently, feeling overwhelmed and depressed, feeling disconnected, feelings of guilt/blame, having scary thoughts, lack of support, relational challenges and general difficulties with adjustment to
pregnancy
, delivery, and
postpartum
periods.

You expected
pregnancy
and motherhood to be a time filled with joy. But you find yourself exhausted and filled with doubt. You are often caring for others before you care for yourself. You have lost yourself along the way and feel completely disconnected from the person you used to be. A part of you longs to rediscover yourself and to feel more confident in this new stage in life. If you made it this far, maybe there is a part of that recognizes that there is a possibility that things can be different, but, you just don’t know where to start.

related struggles can feel isolating and hopeless at times.
Healing is an integral part of our journeys. I believe everyone deserves to live with a sense of peace & purpose. I have worked alongside individuals from all walks of life navigating through addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, & various life transitions. I also help adults & couples navigate through their journeys of infertility,

Hello! My name is Dr. Laura Wilhoit and I offer virtual therapy throughout the state of California. In my 12+ years of experience, I have worked with a variety of people, including those struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and substance use. Outside of depression and anxiety, one of my current areas of focus is helping people as they adjust to parenting challenges, including
postpartum
depression. I am certified through the

Mental Health Certification program (PMH-C) to help parents. As a mother of 3 children myself, I know that parenting can be challenging and parents often aren't given sufficient support.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
