I offer sessions online or in my bright, welcoming Hillcrest office.
For nearly a decade, I’ve helped individuals and couples transform their relationships. My clients are insightful and self-aware but still stuck in patterns they can’t quite shift. They want more than coping skills; they want real, lasting change. Whether you’re navigating conflict, unclear about staying or leaving, or dating people who aren’t good for you, I help you build self-trust, feel empowered to choose your path, and make deeper connections. My approach blends trauma healing, nervous system awareness, and inner child exploration. I’m also training in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy to support deeper emotional healing.

Tell me about your North Star...What are you hoping to move towards? What are you hoping to move away from? What do you want more and less of for yourself and your relationships? What kind of change are you looking to create in your life? Perhaps you’re seeking therapy in response to a time of transition, challenge you’re up against, or are wanting to move towards healing a past or current wound or re-storying a relationship. We all deserve support in moving closer to the preferences for our lives, our relationships, our ways of thinking, feeling and being.

My belief is that unless we get to the heart of the matter of whatever is causing your grief, solutions will only go so far. My approach is holistic; helping you heal core insecurities that are causing you this grief. I use a combination of approaches including cognitive behavioral, psycho dynamic, inner child, and humanistic modalities to help you see how your past is impacting some of your difficulties today. By facilitating a process of becoming aware, I will help you relinquish unconscious beliefs that are holding you back and identify what you need to make change.

You feel broken, stuck, and afraid to talk about what happened. Why bring up things you want to forget? You tried talking about it and you were told “you have it better than I did” or weren’t believed. You pushed it down but end up exhausted and empty inside. You're ashamed. Was it your fault? You try to act normal but no one knows the real you. You don’t have energy and don’t know what you enjoy. You don't have friends, you are too burned out. When you aren’t numb you're angry, anxious, and second guessing everything. Why can't you get over it? You keep reliving the mistakes that reinforces the “proof" of your worthlessness.

I'm Tammy Brooks, Licensed Marriage Family Therapist providing virtual online therapy in California, Counseling in San Diego, CA & now in-person therapy too!
You feel so lonely & disconnected, stuck—even when surrounded by loved ones. You bottle up emotions, too afraid to open up about what's really bothering you. You continue to ignore that empty feeling inside and drift further away from relationships & the life you want. Your family loves you, you know that; but it’s too hard to share what’s really going on. You're more frustrated than ever knowing you’re not living the life you want. You’ve tried meditation, self-care, even therapy, but nothing sticks. Anxiety, overwhelm, stress keeps coming back. You're wondering, “What’s the point of more therapy?” You're tired of same ol' advice.

You’re stuck in the same destructive cycles-whether it’s toxic relationships, addiction, or emotional numbness-and no matter what you do, nothing seems to change. Maybe you keep attracting narcissistic or borderline partners, or you’re battling sex or porn addiction in secret. You might be carrying the weight of sexual trauma, struggling with self-worth, or using alcohol to cope. You’ve tried to “just move on,” but the past keeps pulling you back. You need real solutions, not just another therapist nodding along. I specialize in helping people break free from self-sabotaging patterns tied to addiction, relationships, and trauma.

Are you distracted by insecurities or unhelpful thoughts during sex? Can sex sometimes feel like a performance or an obligation to keep your partner happy? Do you worry that you'll disappoint your partner because of difficulties with erections or orgasm? Do you sometimes avoid partnered sex altogether because masturbating to porn feels less complicated than sex with a partner? If so, you’re not alone, and there's likely nothing "wrong" with you. You may simply be one of the many adults experiencing performance anxieties, desire discrepancies, or who simply have unhelpful beliefs about sex. The good news? I'm know how to help.

Feeling pressure to keep it all together? On the outside, everything looks ok, but inside you’re struggling with your relationship with food, your body and yourself. Maybe you’re tired of yo-yo dieting, tearing yourself apart for every mistake, or worried about being “found out” at any second. At this point, maybe it’s hard to even remember a time you didn’t feel like this. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to look in the mirror without panicking. You’re ready to find joy in life again. Most of all, you’re ready to find a way out of this painful cycle. You’re ready for a new "normal". I can help.

I help guys become better men, husbands, and fathers. As men, we are conditioned to try and solve life's many complexities on our own, but the truth is reaching out for help shows immense strength, not weakness. You may find yourself experiencing anxiety, depression, or issues in your relationships. Perhaps you're more irritable than usual or find yourself being "short" with those around you. Often mental health struggles manifest themselves differently in men than they do in women. I am a therapist that understands the unique challenges men face and how to help navigate through them.

I offer therapy sessions in-person, or online via video.
You don’t fit the mold—so why should your therapy? I help individuals and couples navigating trauma or difficult relationships who feel trapped in unhelpful patterns. From a trauma-informed lens, I recognize how societal systems create stress, disconnection, and marginalization. I work with diverse identities, including LGBTQ+, BIPOC, multicultural couples, and others from marginalized communities. I aim to foster a healing space that resists oppression—where you feel seen, heard, and valued.

I offer in-person sessions at our beautiful office in Rancho Bernardo as well as online via video session.
Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. As a therapist, I believe in the power of the statement "we can do hard things". You might be experiencing something that is making daily life exhausting, heavy, challenging, or more complicated than life can already be, so I'm grateful you've landed on my page. Something really special that I bring into the therapy space is artmaking and creative expression; as research shows, art is a powerful healing tool, so I use this creativity to help you navigate interpersonal dynamics, life changes, grief & loss, identity exploration, hard emotions, or to just be present with yourself in a world of noise.

During this very unusual time, we are now conducting sessions online via Zoom.
I've had the joy of working with children and families for nearly 20 years. I also am the founder/owner of "Preventative Health for Happy Families!" a boutique group practice specializing in Military Families. We embrace the philosophy of resiliency and take a strength based approach to motivate change. In session, we help with the development of basic life skills: management of difficult feelings, stress reduction, effective communication, parenting techniques, practical goal-setting, or improved problem solving. The end result? Thriving individuals, satisfied couples, cohesive families and happy children!

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
