Unaddressed childhood traumas and adverse early life experiences can negatively impact us as adults. I support people who are dealing with unresolved trauma, experiencing difficulties in their relationships, experiencing life transitions (such as getting married, career change, becoming a parent), pregnant/postpartum anxiety and depression, women issues, and concerns relating to the Asian experience. You don't have to continue doing this alone and feeling disconnected from others and yourself. If you are ready to do the work for yourself, I am here to support you every step of the way.

The majority of my work has been with veterans; those recovering from addictions; individuals & families struggling with personality disorders; and Asian -Americans (ranging from students, professionals, trailblazers, and couples).
I am a body-centered therapist who specializes in working with trauma and emotion instability/intensity—this includes interpersonal relationships, depression, anger & anxiety. Therapy is a two-pong approach: the skills & tools to get you through the day-to-day; and psychodynamic work of getting to the root of the issues (trauma-informed lens). I combine DBT/CBT skills and tools, with EMDR and IFS to stabilize symptoms, and make way for healing, a deeper understanding and connection to self.

Asian Americans face unique emotional and mental health struggles: cultural identity issues, language barriers, lack of representation, racial discrimination... These challenges might be making you feel isolated, excruded, and not understood. These negative emotions and feelings are often considered as signs of weaknesses among Asian culture, and you may be feeling embarrassed or ashamed of even having those feelings. Yet, the reality is that you crave for the feelings of being understood, accepted, and simply just seen and heard.

Coming from an Asian American background, I understand what it's like to have limited options for therapists. Are you looking for a therapist who understands the intersection of race/ethnicity, culture, and sexuality and its influence on your mental health? Have you found yourself more anxious around people, topics, or transitions in your own life? Are the ongoing disruptions from the pandemic or world events something that has made it harder to maintain connection with others? My goal in therapy is to navigate these complex stories and empower you to create meaningful change in your life.

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to be here. I help people who struggle with anxiety navigate dating and intimate relationships. I welcome people from all identities and specialize in working with individuals who identify as Asian American and LGBTQ+. I know that struggling with anxiety is exhausting. You're awake at night and your body can't relax. You feel exhausted and tired on a regular basis. On the outside you seem successful, but on the inside you want to scream from all the pressure and feel stuck. Your relationships are also not where you want it to be. You want things to change, but don't know how to get there.

I am an Asian American mindfulness practitioner who specializes in issues of acculturation, racial identity, intersectionality, stress, anxiety, perfectionism, communication, and loving self-kindness.
You've come here because you're lost, lonely, confused or in pain. Perhaps you've done everything the "right way" but that hasn't led to happiness. You want things to change, but you don't know how, or where, to start. I believe I can help you, as I've helped many others, including myself. Therapy can be a radical, healing experience, and I attend my own therapy sessions on a regular basis. In our work together, you can unpack and witness your whole self in a safe, collaborative, and empathic way.

Hi, I'm Helen - a Filipina Asian American therapist. First, I want to acknowledge your decision to start therapy. This decision might come from the realization that "something isn't right". You might be scared, lost, and dealing with a lot of anxiety, sadness, and grief. You may even be struggling secretly. But, you don't have to struggle through this alone. l believe therapy is a brave space to reclaim your identity and begin learning the skills necessary to create a meaningful life. We can work together to help unlearn patterns that don't serve you, to make space for healthy communication and peace.

My approach is heart-centered, humanistic, holistic, experiential, and existential through the social justice lens of an Asian queer femme weaving between Eastern philosophies of mindfulness and contemporary therapeutic practices.
Being human is hard. Sometimes, it can feel like we’re running in circles or sleepwalking through life on auto-pilot with racing thoughts that clutter the mind and paralyze the spirit. Overwhelmed by the weight of emptiness in the heart, but possibly already skipping or spiraling ahead to the next step to carry on with the performance of this existence because “everything is fine.” The show must go on, right? There may be limitations and even detrimental consequences to filling the void with excessive distractions. How did too much become never enough?

You’ve gone through pregnancy and the moment to meet your first newborn baby has arrived. As a new mom, thoughts run in your head like, “how do I take care of this baby when I can’t take care of myself,” “my body feels broken,” “I haven’t slept,” “this is how it is, so I just have to figure it out.” You feel overwhelmed and question if you’re a good mother when you go back to work. At the end of the day, you just want to feel supported and know that you’re still you as you experience being a mom. You decide what works for you and your family and not to live based on “you should do this or you’re supposed to do this.”

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
