The approach I take with individuals,
couples
, and families is based on Attachment Theory and Emotionally-Focused Therapy.
I am fascinated by the affects of attachment and bonding on interpersonal relationships and have a deep commitment to helping people articulate and address the core issues with which they struggle. I am currently working towards my PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certification), as I am passionate about supporting women and families experiencing fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, pregnancy/infant loss, TFMR, grief, adoption, and parenting. I am a a mom who struggled with postpartum anxiety and OCD with both of my pregnancies, so I know firsthand how shameful and isolating these experiences can be.

I specialize in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), focused on helping
couples
create new vulnerable emotional connections with each other when the
relationship
feels more distant than together.
I believe that love is a fundamental experience we all want and need: Love from our partners, relationships, and even from ourselves. However, when that love doesn't work, it really hurts us. I want to work with people who feel stuck in their
relationship
, where that sense of connection feels broken, in disrepair, or lost. My goal and hope is to help you and your
partner
establish new patterns and experiences in and out of therapy, so that you can learn to express and receive the love from one another that we all need. If you want to find out more about me, please see my website at www.josephhantherapy.com

However, through our
relationship
, you will show these 'forces' that you are bigger, faster and stronger in all ways.
Throughout life, we face many challenges: sadness, anger, pain, frustration, anxiety and depression, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, fear and doubt. These life challenges, though extremely difficult, are opportunities for breakthrough. Together, we’ll utilize a collaborative, person-centered, solution-based and trauma-informed approach that directly attacks shame, low self-esteem, guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness-And replace them with love, peace, joy, happiness and security. Together, you and I will unlock your “best self” through consistent non-judgmental exploration, developing self-awareness!

Congratulations on addressing your therapeutic concerns. Taking this first step often is a powerful journey toward healing. it is my belief the
relationship
you have with your therapist is crucial to the rapid resolution of issues. I believe therapy should be a rewarding, hopeful and, whenever possible, brief process. A client's motivation to change and willingness to work is crucial to success. My belief is the combination of insight followed by action is the surest pathway to change. My practice is addressing the barriers clients perceive that stop them from living the life they imagine possible.

I can help you cope and heal from sexual and
relationship
trauma. Trauma can fracture who you are as a person. It can make you feel unlike yourself, distant from others, and changed forever. This does not have to be permanent. Together, we can build resilience, access your strengths, and free you from your past. Learning to understand your trauma, manage symptoms, change unhealthy
relationship
patterns, and increase self-esteem can help you cultivate the life and meaningful relationships that you want. Many of my clients have experienced rape, sexual assault, childhood abuse, systemic oppression, and/or violence from a
partner
.

My wish is to co-create a safe environment and
relationship
during session, so that you may feel more comfortable in your
relationship
with yourself and others.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the racing thoughts in your mind? Has it been difficult to trust yourself, set boundaries, and stick to them? That's exhausting and probably has you feeling underappreciated, resentful, and burnt out. Imagine what it might feel like to be more grounded and resourced in your body and mind. If any of this resonates with you, there is good news! You are not alone, and I can help! It is possible to live a more integrated and full life, where you are in control. I have a special place in my heart for supporting women who are struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, and co-dependency.

At some point we’ve all felt overwhelmed, confused or worried about a
relationship
, life decision or major choice we’ve had to make. Other times we experience sadness because what we wanted did not work out. Sometimes unfortunate things happen to us and no matter what we do, we can’t forget. We feel powerless, out of control and we can’t move on. What we all have in common is that we want to feel fully alive and connected to our loved ones and free of worry, sadness, anger and disappointment. We want to let go of the past and fully live in the present with hope and optimism for the future.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
