Life can feel overwhelming when you’re sensitive. Thoughts race, emotions feel magnified, and it’s easy to become dysregulated or feel disconnected from yourself. Our sessions will incorporate somatic and nervous system approaches to help you feel more regulated and at ease. Together, we'll slow down and make space for growth—whether that means exploring your past, processing the week, learning coping strategies, or simply allowing yourself to exhale and just be.

If you’re feeling alone, misunderstood, or like a burden to those around you I am here to hold space for you. Sometimes life can feel dark, stagnant or not what we expected it to be and a simple, "it gets better, hang in there" isn't helpful. I can help you process any emotions, gain a different perspective and develop tools in order to help life feel meaningful again. Healing takes time, space and help from those around us. Anyone looking for help with attachment issues, life transitions, trauma, racial stress, addiction, anxiety and depression. I am here to help. (Spanish speaking as well)

I work with gay men navigating this season of life: depression, anxiety, grief, illness, including cancer and HIV, retirement, and the partners who love them.
I won't hand you a worksheet or talk you out of what you feel. In this season, depression and anxiety are rarely just chemistry — they sit at the intersection of history, identity, loss, and what the coming years are for. So that's where we work. Sometimes things lift; sometimes what changes first is that you stop being alone with it.

I often feel as though I get to experience one of life’s greatest privileges - I bear witness to the fullness of what it means to be human. Not only do I get to sit with people as they cope through painful and challenging moments, but also I am able to celebrate in moments of deep joy and pleasure. I strive to create a space that is compassionate, caring, warm, and non-judgmental, and I aim to meet you wherever you are in your journey. Through this, I remain humbled by the stories and experiences that clients bring to the room. I believe in the power of therapy. I believe in the power of curiosity and connection. I believe in YOU!

Welcome! I am a Psychologist offering psychotherapy through secure videochat, or Telehealth in CA, VA, MD, DC. This is a convenient and effective way to get the help you need on your schedule where you're comfortable. For more information, see my web page (https://drjeffreymann.com/telehealth/). Frequently the events of our lives get to the point where we feel like so much of our energy is being wasted simply trying to "keep it together". I'm not a believer in magic cures, but there is A LOT than can be done to address the ways we think and behave in our everyday lives that can have a profound impact on our satisfaction with life.

For over 15 years, I've helped people work through anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, and relationship challenges. My approach blends talk therapy with body-based practices including Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, Hakomi, and Craniosacral-informed techniques. I've seen how much of what we carry lives not just in our thoughts, but in our breath, our tension, and our nervous system. Healing happens not just through insight, but through reconnecting with your body. Our work can help you feel safe enough to make positive changes, inside and out.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
