Having the opportunity to assist someone on their journey of improving their mental health and reaching their goals is a privilege. I enjoy supporting people of all ages, including children, teens, and adults, as they navigate life transitions, anxiety, including social and school-based anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, low self-esteem, and traumatic life events. I specialize in working with teens and emerging adults, and my experience ranges from school-based counseling, community mental health, and most recently, at a group private practice.

Hello, I'm Lori, welcome to my profile page! Working with families has always been a passion of mine. Since 1994, I have worked with families with the goal of facilitating effective communication and emotional health. It's not easy growing up in the Bay area today. I grew up on the Peninsula and it is a totally different world now for our kids. I have two teenagers myself, and the pressure they feel to succeed sometimes feels insurmountable! I lead several teen groups. Teen groups provide a safe place to come and talk about those challenges.

Kristy engages in play and art therapy with her younger clients, and draws on Family Systems, Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy skills, and Compassion-based therapy for her individual adult clients.
She strongly believes in the importance of uncovering family histories around trauma as they frequently provide keys to eliminating “stuckness” and depressive symptoms. Kristy also leads Positive Discipline parenting classes, designed to help parents strengthen relationships with their children and learn how to parent without punishment or permissiveness.

What a time to be alive. Are you feeling isolated and alone, or like your situation is hopeless? Do you struggle to balance family and work and joy in our current world? Does your child seem to be losing their zest? If you are willing to try one more thing, I would love to be your ally. The journey has become gruesome. So is every hero’s tale, and what a tale we are living though. You are not alone!

You are someone who cares deeply, works hard, and strives to do your best in your relationships, career, and daily life. At times, anxiety, perfectionism, burnout or stress can make it difficult to slow down, trust yourself, or feel fully present. You might find yourself overthinking, putting pressure on yourself, or focusing so much on others' needs that your own needs get pushed aside. I specialize in working with adults who feel held back by self-doubt in their relationships, family roles, and life ambitions. Together, we'll work to quiet the inner critic, build self-confidence, and help you trust yourself more fully.

As an Art Therapist, I often invite clients to express what words can't: to explore the color that represents them today, what symbol captures their strengths, or what self-image might be blocking their joy.
We all have our unique story– the one that we tell and the one that others told us about who we are and where we come from. In therapy, one of the greatest gifts is to feel seen, heard, and validated by sharing who you are, what has happened along the way, and where you are going but maybe can't quite find. Most of the clients that come see me feel anxious, unseen, and alone. Some feel angry about that disconnection, while others turn that anger inward, afraid to risk pushing others further away. Together, we can begin to create a warm, affirming space to explore these experiences with curiosity and compassion.

As a board certified art therapist, I use art media, the creative process, and resulting artwork to help individuals, couples and families process trauma, reduce anxiety and depression, manage addictions, develop self-awareness, address unresolved emotional conflicts, improve social skills, and build self-esteem.
Whether you've been in therapy before, or this will be your first time; it is important to feel safe and comfortable enough to talk about things that are causing you distress. Are you experiencing life changes, decisions, challenges, trauma, illness, or disabilities? Are you looking for a way to cope with anxiety or depression?  Do you have nightmares or trouble sleeping?  Maybe you have experienced the loss of someone close to you, or a job, or a beloved pet.  Or you are just plain stressed out.  All the time. Talk can help, but so can non-verbal expressive therapies, in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment.

I have been trained in the Expressive Arts and bring art into sessions with both children and adults to add insight and deepen self-observation.
I believe that all people have innate skills and strengths and have the potential to live rich and meaningful lives but sometimes get stuck in patterns and behaviors that interfere with their ability to grow. I believe psychotherapy is an important tool to help people discover their natural ability to heal, to love and to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Our fast-paced and demanding lives can create uncomfortable stressors in individuals and families. My time with each client provides an opportunity for calm and reflection in challenging and stressful lives.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
