Two powerful tools I use are guided imagery and art therapy, when appropriate.
I understand what it means to feel out of control, we all do. The question is, how can I navigate the feelings that arise; even when they sometimes appear disconnected from current events. Life’s path is one filled with many lessons. Sometimes resolution is difficult and I’m here to help. Working together, we will focus in on what can be learned and used to meet the next challenge with a greater ability. In a safe environment, we can clarify and understand the source of discomfort to successfully build self-supporting tools and strategies that will maintain the goals you set for yourself.

I specialize in serving GIFTED PROFESSIONAL AND CREATIVE ADULTS AND COUPLES. Being gifted is a minority experience, which is hard to own or talk about due to cultural (mis)attributions of elitism and arrogance, so many gifted people have not explored this aspect of their identity and how this may be related to difficulties in their life. You may feel out of step with the world or misunderstood, and not know why, or that you have to hide aspects of yourself. Or have trouble making friends, be told you’re "too intense", feel socially awkward, not understand why others seem to respond negatively to your ideas, or feel deeply disappointed with the world’s imperfections. IN MY OFFICE, YOU CAN BE UNRESERVEDLY YOURSELF. Talking frankly about being gifted can improve your self-esteem and offer relief from self-doubt, loneliness, anxiety, or depression, as you develop strategies to meet the majority culture more effectively. Before becoming a psychologist, I worked for 25 years in startups, nonprofits, academia, and F500 companies. I hold a Stanford MBA and Berkeley MSEE, and have special training in assisting gifted clients. I've also published research on the creative process.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Art Therapist, and I have worked extensively with adolescents, families, and individuals navigating complex emotional and behavioral concerns, including dual diagnosis and recovery.
When a teen is struggling with eating issues, substance use, or intense emotional and behavioral patterns, it can take over the entire family. Many of the families I work with have already tried therapy, interventions, or programs—and are still searching for something that truly helps. I provide specialized, family-based therapy for adolescents and parents navigating complex, high-stakes situations. My work focuses on understanding the underlying patterns driving these struggles and helping families create meaningful, lasting change.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
