For many people, standard 12 step-dominated
substance use
treatment does not work. People may tell you that your problem is a lack of willingness, or that you are in "denial." But maybe you need someone to listen to you rather than talk at you. The fact that these programs do not work for you does not mean that you are not capable of change. It probably just means that you have not found an approach that addresses your individual needs and values.

As a psychotherapist, I’ve worked with various populations and people facing different challenges, including depression, anxiety, trauma,
substance use
, suicidal ideation and self-harm.
Whether you’re struggling with a crisis, life transition, feeling overwhelmed, or finding yourself stuck in unproductive patterns, there is no need to navigate this on your own. Therapy is about exploring the self in a way that allows you to grow through self-discovery. I focus on meeting clients where they are and seeing the world from their perspective, and go together from there.

My varied experience over the past years has given a strong background in providing services to people struggling with severe mental illness, personality disorders, developmental disabilities,
substance use
issues, eating disorders and general difficulties with life transitions.
The Therapist for People Who Don't Like Therapy... My biggest goal in therapy is to get you out of my office and back into your life! With that said, I have found that most people, at some point in their life, could benefit from some professional listening and feedback. Our friends and family are great sources of support, but are often too closely involved to provide the kind of unbiased perspective that we need to help us out of a rut or to enact the true change that we really desire.

As a psychologist, I help individuals manage a range of psychological and psychosocial issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, life changes, health-related issues, relationship issues, and
substance use
disorders.
When we encounter life stressors, whether anticipated or not, we experience a range of reactions. Many of which, we are not told how to deal with, yet are expected to manage. Mental health issues might complicate our ability to manage stressors, thereby worsening symptoms and making it even more difficult to handle both life and one's mental well-being. We sometimes feel as though those around us, despite their well intentions and support, do not quite understand what we are going through. We may feel unable to find our way, feel how we felt, or pursue what we hoped our life to be.

I have a particular focus on helping people with anxiety and depression,
substance use
issues, work stress, family/marital conflict, and insomnia, chronic pain, and other health conditions.
In our lives we are all trying to maximize our happiness and minimize our pain. Our life situation can feel overwhelming, pain can feel constant, and happiness can feel far out of our reach. Unfortunately, sometimes what we thought would make us happy ends up bringing us more pain instead. I offer support and tools to help you re-orient yourself on your path toward cultivating happiness. I use a holistic approach to helping my clients, which may include a combination of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Buddhist-oriented psychology/mindfulness strategies, emotion regulation, and communication skills training.

I understand the fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and discouragement of repeating the same cycle over and over again. Drinking too much and embarrassing or humiliating yourself often feels like it is damaging your soul. You keep trying to make changes but don't feel like you can let yourself down anymore. It's time to break this vicious cycle and you don't have to do it alone. I have been helping good people just like you make positive changes with their
substance use
for over a decade. You can break free and give yourself and your family the life you deserve. Stop letting substances hold you back from achieving your potential.

Don't wait for a better time, delays in treating active
Substance Use
can have catastrophic results.
Break away from the painful, short lived New Years pledge. If getting back on the wagon has been frustrating, try a different approach this year. If getting back to AA meetings or checking into a program sounds unappealing or even futile you’re not alone. Solutions have that have failed in the past aren’t likely to work again, and you deserve better. I utilize reliable cognitive behavioral, and mindfulness techniques to get you away from shame based "programming" and into creating a meaningful life. Are you feeling frustrated, confused, stressed, depressed, or lost? Living a human life means learning to live with the human condition and the challenges that arise as a result - mortality, relationships, conflict, emotionality, suffering, and change. Therapy can help you adapt and adjust to experiences that can often be challenging and confusing; experiences that you may not always have the skills or insight to address. Therapy is meant to be a safe environment for you to process your experience of life to get emotional support, helpful feedback, and a healing perspective.

My main therapeutic proficiency is Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I also incorporate hypnotherapy for appropriate situations. I worked as a drug and alcohol counselor, for 10 years, helping recipients of DUI’s to utilize alternative outlets for their personal challenges. I also worked as a research assistant for a neuropsychologist. While working with the neuropsychologist, I had the opportunity to work with juvenile delinquents to foster their sense of self-worth and help facilitate a positive life orientation.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
