I consider myself an LGBTQ positive therapist with a focus on gender dysphoria, cutting, and pansexuality.
"Teamwork makes the dream work." Meeting life's difficulties alone can be overwhelming. Together let's discover the beauty and purpose of our inner struggles. By doing so as a team we can share the burden of past failures and shed the pain that paves the way for our future success. Obstacles in our path are only there to make us stronger. Lifes distressing moments are only that a moment. Our job is to not always avoid these events but to endure them while not making them worst.

I have dedicated myself to improving the lives of individuals struggling with an array of mental health problems (i.e., depression, anxiety, childhood abuse, low self-esteem, etc.) and with a diverse set of backgrounds (i.e., undocumented Latinx individuals, military veterans, and families within the child welfare system). Ever wanted to break the cycle of trauma? Now is the time. As a daughter of immigrant parents, a working mother, and a wife, I can see your resiliency and grit. Getting to this point has been challenging, but guess what? You're doing it.

I have been helping people heal, learn, and grow for more than 20 years. I am a psychotherapist, coach, teacher, and author of the best-selling book, Scared Selfless, which explores the aftereffects of child abuse and how to heal from it. My greatest gift as a therapist is my well-founded optimism. I know that no matter how bad things may currently seem, my clients can overcome obstacles, process pain, and move on to happier, healthier, more purposeful lives. I believe that all people have an innate capacity to grow into their authentic selves; they simply need the right conditions.

Working for over a decade with clients of moderate to high-risk mental health symptoms, I have come to understand the importance of therapy to help process underlying traumas and hurt to improve stability outside of hospitalization. My ideal client is one who would benefit from learning, understanding, and overcoming their mental health issues stemming from depression, anxiety, or other disorders. I understand no one lives in a vacuum, so using what we learn to help incorporate protective factors such as family, kin, psychiatrist, or doctors is an important part of treatment and long-time life satisfaction.

I have over 40 years of experience (and training) in Disordered Eating. Although it is my specialty, I love working with the general population as well. I understand addiction, compulsion and obsession very well and can help you understand their function in your life and help you build the skills necessary to put them out of a job. I believe everything we do, we do in an effort to take care of ourselves even though the things we choose to do may harm us. I help you to find more direct, satisfying ways to meet your real needs.

Try as we might, sometimes happiness and contentment always seem just out of reach. Depression, anxiety and stress can make getting out of bed in the morning a daunting task. Troubles in your relationship or conflict in the family can make you feel helpless or overwhelmed. You don’t like yourself and never feel good enough at work or around certain people. Maybe you just can’t quite put your finger on exactly what is wrong, you just know you don’t want to hurt anymore. We want you to know that there is HOPE. Things can get better.

I’m comfortable working with clients across the lifespan, but I work best with those who have historically felt misunderstood and unheard, and even those that are distrustful of the therapy process. With that in mind, my goal is to make each client feel special and empowered during and after their time with me. I enjoy talking about “hard things” or even “taboo” things, and encourage my clients to use their time with me in whatever way they need. I don’t believe that progress is linear and I am interested in meeting my client where they are with their goals even if the starting point is simply making an appointment and showing up.

I commend you for reaching out to the possibilities therapy may offer. Change begins in this moment. Life can feel unmanageable. We experience the joys and challenges of relationships. The relationship may be with ourselves: inner struggles, uncertain goals, questioned values, addictive tendencies and confusion as to why we "do what we do". The relationship may be with another. The relationship may call upon us to clarify our expectations, to establish personal boundaries, to develop flexibility, to reflect on co-dependence, to improve our communication style and to open ourselves to change.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
