I come from the belief that every single human being has great value and is worthy of taking up space. When we are young, we cry for food, attention, or toys. As infants, we know we deserve these things. Somewhere along the way, many of us stop asking for what we need, or believing we deserve it at all. Some forget that their body deserves to be loved, appreciated or celebrated. They avoid intimacy or silence their preferences sexually, out of fear their partner could laugh or pass judgement. They try diet after diet, attempting to make themselves smaller or different, with a never ending finish line.

I believe that valuable therapeutic work can only be done with a strong and trusting relationship between client and therapist. I work to create a safe and comfortable environment in which you can truly show up as yourself, and know that you will be accepted and seen just as you are. My approach is warm and authentic. I want therapy to be so much more than me sitting in front of you and asking “...how does that make you feel?” If you’re interested in integrating art, play, movement, music, sand tray, or spiritual practices into our work - let’s do it! We all deserve to take up space in ways that feel good.

I am particularly interested in working with depression, grief and loss, self esteem issues, relationship challenges, identity development and trauma.
Whether it's a relationship challenge, depression, grief and loss or anxiety, we all face moments in life where we feel overwhelmed and unable to move forward. Confronting emotional challenges through therapy takes a great deal of strength and courage. It would be an honor to accompany you on your journey towards healing, empowerment, and change. My goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where you are able to be your authentic self, while exploring your feelings, hopes, and struggles. I approach each client with respect, cultural sensitivity, and support.

I have worked since 2005 with a variety of clients dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, and other life challenges, primarily in community mental health with marginalized and underserved communities. I see people seeking support for many difficulties, including: imposter syndrome, self-esteem, boundaries, communication skills, and more. Reducing self-judgment and increasing curiosity about your self will help you to make better decisions that are aligned with your core values. This will ultimately unhook you from negative thoughts or worries so you are more fully available for all the important things in your life.

*I offer teletherapy to clients in California, Nevada and Colorado. I offer in-office visits in Sacramento and San Francisco when allowed by local ordinance and client comfort.* Sometimes we expect far too much from ourselves. Each client is invited into a space where there is no expectation and where they are free to be themselves, without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. Adults can sometimes struggle to find space to hold compassion for themselves. Couples (and all variants of relationship structure) can also use a nonjudgmental time and space to feel heard, while building tools for communication.

My theoretical approach is adaptable, be it helping to cope with recent trauma or grief, or reducing the severity of chronic conditions such as low self esteem , anxiety and depression.
I believe that when you first begin therapy, you hope to make changes in yourself that will improve your life. Possible changes might include ending the feeling that you are basically bad, or always at fault, or never good enough, or unlovable. You are aware that such feelings have caused you to lose valued relationships, caused you failure in school or at work, and possibly caused you to behave in ways you regret. If you are usually depressed, anxious, lonely or feeling guilty, you hope that therapy will bring relief, that you can finally begin enjoying your life.

Once we get caught in the middle of some kind of struggle, it can be difficult to find the way out. The strategies that we once used to cope don't work anymore, and we need a little help learning a new way. That's exactly what I'm here for. I firmly believe that no one should have to suffer alone, and I value the opportunity to walk with people through their challenges. What's even better is seeing people get to the other side of their pain, having gained a greater sense of empowerment during the journey.

I work with trauma, dual diagnosis (mental health and addictions), grief and loss. I focus on a humanistic, client-centered, collaborative approach that highlights your internal wisdom through trauma-informed care. I find it especially important to explore the influence of layered systems such as social injustices, intergenerationality, cultural and socioeconomic complexities of the human experience to take into account a big picture perspective to help with your adversities. My passion is helping change systems one person at a time.

My practice is grounded in the belief that we all have a deep desire and fundamental need to connect — with ourselves and with others. My practice melds: my collaborative approach + affirming, nonjudgmental, humorous and directive style + lived experiences as a West Indian, first-gen, queer, womxn + a trauma/somatic/relational focus and Afrocentric perspectives to curate a transformative process that allows you and/or your partners to experience: connection—healing—liberation.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
