As a queer therapist, I specialize in supporting clients with diverse sexualities, genders, relationship structures, and a multitude of intersecting identities.
Accepting new clients on Wednesday evenings! - Life is full of challenges, and being part of the LGBTQIA+ community adds another layer to navigate. You're doing your best but may still be feeling overwhelmed. Relationships, family dynamics, work responsibilities, and/or past traumas can all play a role in our current difficulties. The good news is that obstacles can be opportunities. Let's explore them together.

As a multiculturally sensitive and queer allied therapist I welcome the opportunity to work with individuals from various ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.
I am a firm believer in perpetual personal growth and that we are constantly evolving throughout our lives; every interaction and choice progresses us through the development of self. Through this foundation I am a strong advocate of helping you understand your needs, values, and hopes as a framework to your decisions and goals. You are who you are today because of what you have experienced, and you will be who you are tomorrow because of the choices you make today.

I specialize in treating LGBT concerns (individual and relationship), and augment my practice with specialized training in transgender care.
I offer teletherapy to clients in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. I offer in-office visits in Sacramento. Sometimes we expect far too much from ourselves. Each client is invited into a space where there is no expectation and where they are free to be themselves, without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. Adults can sometimes struggle to find space to hold compassion for themselves. Any style relationship can also use a nonjudgmental time and space to feel heard, while building tools for communication.

I’m Dr. Kate Bautch (she/they), a licensed clinical psychologist and trail guide for people whose identities and experiences fall outside of the status quo ( queer, neurodiverse, chronically ill/disabled and their families, ethically non-monogamous) and who need support navigating a path that is not the well-traveled trail of societal norms. Here you do not have to worry about educating someone on your experience, and the focus can be entirely on you and the support you need.

As a Queer Latinx cis-gendered-male therapist of color, I am proud to be a representative of my often-marginalized communities.
Are you currently searching for a sense of meaning and purpose in your life? Do you find yourself in an existential/spiritual emergency? Are you exploring your personal identity, expression, or sexuality? I help people of all ages increase self-awareness and decrease symptomology by bringing unconscious material into conscious awareness. Mental health concerns eventually arise because deep in our mind/body/soul we yearn for authenticity/individuation. Together we can explore which aspects of ourselves that no longer serve us to let go, in order to make space for something new to enter.

As a gay man and therapist, I actively and passionately support LGBTQIA+ clients as well as any other person who experiences marginalization.
Maybe your family was less than healthy growing up and you wonder how that’s impacting you today? Did you feel ignored back then? If you felt pressure to conform to others’ expectations and hide how you felt - you're not alone. Over time that experience can leave you numb, confused and angry. If you haven't been taught how to manage doubt and insecurity, they creep and leave you anxious, resentful, and depressed. You want to express yourself and hold healthy boundaries in your relationships, but don't know how to. I will help teach you to accept yourself, hold boundaries and stop beating yourself up.

If you could embody all of your identities without shame and judgment - who would you be? Much of my work has been centered around neurodivergent, transgender teens. and LGBTQAI2S+ individuals. I enjoy working with all neurodivergent humans trying to navigate ADHD, executive dysfunction, low self-esteem, and identity formation & expression. As a queer therapist, I understand the safety and security needed to create a healing relationship. I also assist with psychedelic integration for individuals processing the larger meanings derived from healing mystical experiences and life transitions.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
