In my 32 years of working with Children, Adolescents, Couples, and Multi-Cultural, Single Parent, Traditional/Non-Traditional Families, I have found the greatest success by using Albert Ellis' Rational Emotional Cognitive Behavioral approach to treatment. My specialties include trauma, problems related to childhood/
family
issues, sexual abuse/assault, creating and maintaining fulfilling relationships, depression, anxiety, and attachment issues.
I believe that we each have an innate force that drives us towards wholeness and the fulfillment of our individual potential. However, life experiences can lead to a break from our personal experience of the soul, resulting in a deep sense of loss and isolation from self and others. I work collaboratively with my clients to remove obstacles that block the connection to a deeper experience of the soul and authentic self, and then move towards the realization of a fulfilling and purposeful life. "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there... " Rumi

As a female in this busy world, you feel that you are right on the verge of a breakthrough but sometimes you feel stuck and misunderstood. You feel that it’s really rough being a woman right now in a patriarchal society. You start feeling pessimistic and hopeless. Something is off: “my sleep is disturbed; I am always tired; I keep worrying about things that I have no control over; I find myself crying more than usual; my friends and
family
notice that something is happening to me but I just can’t figure out how to solve the depression and anxiety I am feeling”. This isn’t like me you think. I want to feel contentment in my life.

I am also a licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist
in New York for bi-coastal clients.
Giving yourself a space dedicated to self-reflection is so helpful. I work with adolescents, often highly accomplished adults, and couples in my practice. I help clients meet their own goals by building a strong relationship, encouraging reflection, and exploring alternatives. I am warm, engaging, and well trained. In my work with clients, we look at the influence of a client's
family
-of-origin, their current stressors and challenges, and the relationship that unfold between the client and myself. I assist my clients to work through their challenges, so they have more choices to live a more authentic life.

Outside of the office I find balance and joy in music, hiking, reading everything and anything, cooking ridiculous quantities of whatever is seasonal, photography, painting, restorative yoga,
family
road trips, and playing with my rambunctious dog.
I am Dr. Kate Bautch, a licensed psychological associate and I work with adults, adolescents, and children, providing individual, couples, and group therapy. In our sessions I seek to create a safe space in which you feel respected, understood, and supported. From that place, we will work together to identify what is causing your pain, and how we can use your resilience and personal strengths to facilitate the positive change you are seeking. I approach each session with acceptance, empathy, compassion, and sometimes a little humor to lighten the mood when appropriate.

I use a holistic approach to helping my clients, which may include a combination of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Buddhist-oriented psychology/mindfulness strategies, emotion regulation, and communication skills training.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
