I work extensively with individuals going through divorce.
I offer Solution Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for many clients. I also utilize Narrative Therapy for work with trauma victims, play therapy with children, and experiential therapy certain individuals. For couples, I prefer the Gottman Method as well as DBT. I incorporate artistic expression for those who align with that approach.

Life is expected to have moments of triumphs and disappointments this is unavoidable. The therapeutic relationship that I hope to bring to our sessions is one of compassion, understanding, empathy, and openness to differences without judgment. It is my belief that everyone on this planet strives to have a life that is satisfactory to them and their experiences. There is a time to be serious and a time to relax and laugh a little. My hope is to normalize your human experience and help you realize your own strengths and potentials.

People with such suffering often rush to breakup or divorce.
I love working with couples or individuals where a relationship (or lack of one) is a problem. Over the years, I have helped many couples learn not only to tolerate but also appreciate their differences. I have helped individuals know about themselves as we investigate how they are in relationship.

My areas of expertise are divorce recovery, clarifying dating patterns to find the right partner, marriage difficulties after a new baby, and step-parenting.
Examining your expectations and relationship patterns can help you to understand what went wrong, to heal, and to redefine your future. If you are a new parent or a step-parent there are often dramatic shifts in your identity and how you see the world; therapy can be helpful.

Struggling to show up physically, emotionally, and socially at school or work? Overwhelmed with the thought that things may never get better? Or with the thought, "I'm better off alone?" Many have been here and have had similar thoughts including me. But if my 25+ years of working with youth, young adults, and families have taught me anything, it’s the incredible ability of a healing connection to create change, even when things are looking bleak. No matter where you find yourself, positive change is possible. It’s my belief that honesty, transparency and open conversation can pave the way to a better tomorrow.

We all want to live happy and productive lives and we all have strengths that help us do this. Strengths lie in our relationships and inside of us. Sometimes blocks keep us from being able to use our strengths. At Chicago Center for Relationship Counseling, we have many excellent therapists who are available to help access strengths and lift blocks.

Do you turn to food, alcohol, or drugs to deal with feeling lonely or rejected, or to cope with added stress and anxiety? Have you lost the joyful feelings that you used to have in life? Do you feel fear stricken, even in the “comfort” of your own home? Do you feel like there are so many things to manage and your forever growing “to do list” leaves you feeling completely overwhelmed? I work with women who have experienced tough stuff in their childhood and feel like they have lost their way. Sometimes we turn to food, alcohol, and drugs or, we withdraw from friends and family, just to cope. Does this sound like you?

Divorce Therapists
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
