I practice EMDR and DBT in order to help my clients to overcome trauma history and to help them live and enjoy life mindfully.
I primarily work with Farsi and Dari speaking refugees who have been exposed to hardship and war. I also see teenagers who are going through identity crisis and transitional periods from childhood to adulthood. I see couples coming from traditional backgrounds trying to save their marriage by adjusting to mainstream culture. Finally, I see individuals with low-self esteem, confidence, and decision making issues.

Trauma is really a disruption to the nervous system. Trauma often creates patterns and loops that extend into many areas of a person's life, and can be difficult or painful to overcome. It can affect our bodies, our minds and the way we relate to other people. Sometimes the way people survive their trauma brings them more pain, adds to the chaos, and reinforces negative beliefs that perpetuate the cycle as well as causing other mental health issues grow- such as depression and anxiety. I work with people of various cultures, sexual orientations, and gender identities and know that trauma is non-discriminatory.

The therapeutic journey begins internally by listening to the heart when it tells us there is a need for change in our lives. Second is having the courage to admit when we need outside support to begin this change, and finally being bold enough to use our voices to seek out the assistance of a therapist. Therapy with the right therapist can be helpful to everyone. my preferred theoretical approach is client-centered. A client-centered therapeutic approach allows me to meet my clients where they are at and together develop the appropriate path forward. Other theoretical approaches include; CBT, DBT , experiential, & psychodynamic.

Are you worried about changes in your child’s mood and behavior? Are you being told not to worry, but you are sure these changes are more than adolescence? Welcome and good for you, for trusting your parental instincts and seeking help for your child and family. I understand how overwhelming a parent feels in light of their child’s mental health challenges. Eating disorders, Depression, anxiety, and trauma can rob your child of joy and affect all areas of their life. I want you to know you do not have to try to manage this by yourself. It would be an honor to support your family and child on your path toward healing.

I emphasize close collaboration with my clients and use a combination of psychological theories in session: Emotion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
I strongly believe clients are the experts in their own experience and that their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs should be valued as such. In working together we will aim to find a deeper awareness and understanding of your personal value system, and explore how living in alignment with those values can create motivation to take appropriate action that promotes optimal mental-emotional health. We can explore how your current strengths (talents, relationships, resources, and community connections) can be used to support your goals for improved living and functioning.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
