My theoretical approaches are evidenced based practices which include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to decrease high anxiety and manage moods that interfere in the daily function, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to manage difficult events in your day that create mental chaos from traumatic experiences.
I am a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT) in California. I have been working as a therapist for 13 years. In my work, I am fortunate to have worked with both children and adults struggling in childhood abuse, traumatic experiences, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. In addition, I work with adults with Substance Abuse Disorder, caregivers caring for a mentally ill loved one, functional life skills, relationship issues, and parenting.

I most frequently use solution-focused, cognitive behavior therapy, and client-centered approach.
I often like to teach and practice skills such as coping skills to utilize in life that clients can practice to helping them feel better and be their best selves. With my experience in working in foster care, adoption, and in schools, I find that my approach is helpful for those who are looking for guidance with issues in those areas of their lives.

To address childhood or adult traumas, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is the treatment of choice.
Collaboration is always in order when addressing individual differences and needs, since no two people are the same. My approach is to work close with patients utilizing empirically vallidated techniques conveyed in a user friendly manner. Identifying core conflicts, enhancing patient understanding and education, and treating underlying causes, not symptoms, is essential if relief from the distress is to be achieved.

I meet with parents who are struggling with a variety of challenges including transitioning into parenthood, co-parenting, managing a child's challenging behavioral or emotional issues, balancing caregiving responsibilities with other aspects of life, foster/adoption, or relating to and caring for a child with special needs.
Experiencing traumas can often bring about problems including anxiety, post-traumatic stress, anger, and depression. I help to empower people to find the courage to address the impact of these experiences on their view of self, relationships, and general functioning. I provide a safe space for people to disclose their experiences and begin to heal.

I help with identifying the core issues underlying self-defeating thoughts and behavior and teach new strategies to manage uncomfortable thoughts and memories.
I have an eclectic therapeutic orientation, blending psychodynamic and family systems theories together. I view most client’s struggles as coming from their childhood experiences but present in day-to-day struggles at home, at school and in our personal relationships. I am mindful that past experiences may color your perceptions or influence your behavior.

Elinor Proett Hopkins, LCSW has worked as a psychotherapist for the past 30 years. She specializes in treating anxiety and depression and is very skilled at helping clients to see their problems in a new way, often formulating unique approaches to a client's personal evolution. Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
