As a credentialed
art
therapist, I often use
art
and play therapy when working with children, adolescents and families.
I have been a therapist for over twenty-five years and have had the opportunity to work with many different clients and circumstances along the way. I provide therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families. I am constantly amazed by the strength and perseverance of my clients and I greatly appreciate that they allow me into their lives so that we may work through their challenges together. In particular, I have worked extensively with children and parents, many of divorced families. My adult clients are often dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and childhood issues.

For children, play and
art
are a vital part of the therapy process.
The search for a therapist often begins at the point when the pain and struggle outweigh the capacity to cope on your own. Whether the search for a therapist is for yourself or your child, to work on a specific challenge or to work through years of challenges, finding relief from the pain and struggle and a path for growth is often the end goal. My intention is to function as a compassionate guide to find the answers within you, perhaps buried under stress and trauma responses which allowed you to survive to this point in your journey.

Talk therapy using Narrative & CBT methods is a primary focus while
Art Therapy
is a specialty offered to those who have interest in combining
art
and creativity with the traditional approach.
I am passionate and dedicated to creating a trusting relationship and safe space for the process of narrating your personal story. Over 10 years I've worked in community-based programs with both teens and adults. I especially enjoy working with young people ages 16 to 25 (Transitional Aged Youth) a population that’s often overlooked and underserved. Having personally struggled myself during that time, I know how to identify with that challenging life transition and sometimes overwhelming decisions of "What's next?" let alone the bigger question of "Who am I?".

I use evidence based practices;
Art therapy
, Narrative therapy, CBT, Gestalt and more.
My focus is on working with youth and adults who carry unique emotional and psychological sensitivities. My style, that embodies more of humanistic and holistic approaches, has proven to be very effective with individuals who are connected to spiritual or creative energies; individuals such as artists, healers and LGBTQ, who struggle with self acceptance, self esteem, anxiety and depression. My aim is to help you find and acknowledge all parts of yourself, heal and embrace them all, in order to create a complete and wholesome you.

Depending on the client's needs, I also utilize mindfulness training, meditation, and
art therapy
in sessions.
I see children and adults with a variety of presenting problems such as depression/anxiety, low self-esteem, grief/loss, relationship issues, eating disorders, LGBT concerns, teen/child issues, and PTSD/Trauma, to name a few. As a therapist, my goal is to be a non-biased support for you as we manage and process your hurdles. If your goal is personal growth, my role is to not change who you are, but to help you become holistically happier and a more fulfilled version of yourself.

I have been a practicing LCSW for 20 years. I believe that people can change for the better at any time in their lives. Our daily responsibilities often get in the way of us prioritizing our mental health, however there is no better time than now to start your growth journey. I am here to help you. I am very open minded and non judgmental. You can tell me anything and be assured that I will listen with compassion. I worked in healthcare most of my career and specialize in end of life, caregiver compassion fatigue and adjustment issues related to managing chronic illnesses. I also work with tweens, teens and adults of all ages.

I allow individuals to see themselves with compassion and
art
.
The idea that one learns by experiencing and is truly capable of making the necessary shifts in their lives is a mantra I live by. When one person mirrors another with gentle listening, others are able to clearly see what no longer works in their lives. Ingrained habits coming from difficult childhoods could be the very source of havoc, that with conscious awareness, can shift. Perhaps the way one communicates is keeping love from flowing in your life. Maybe parenting a child who reminds you of yourself means confronting yourself on a deeply personal level. Or perhaps it is simply a life transition that is simply too much.

I believe that valuable therapeutic work can only be done with a strong and trusting relationship between client and therapist. I work to create a safe and comfortable environment in which you can truly show up as yourself, and know that you will be accepted and seen just as you are. My approach is warm and authentic. I want therapy to be so much more than me sitting in front of you and asking “...how does that make you feel?” If you’re interested in integrating
art
, play, movement, music, sand tray, or spiritual practices into our work - let’s do it! We all deserve to take up space in ways that feel good.

I use play and
art
in my work with children, to provide a space that allows them to express themselves.
First, I want to acknowledge how brave you are for being here and seeking help. There is no problem too big or small to ask for help. My hope is to create a space for you to feel truly safe and supported while having your experiences in life honored and validated. I help children, teens, and young adults overcome anxiety, depression, trauma, school stressors, behavioral challenges, and family relationship issues. Through a collaborative approach, I help clients recognize healthier patterns, positive coping skills, and behaviors to help them move towards a place of healing.

Does your son or daughter seem unhappy, worried or frightened? Do they frequently get into trouble at school? Has there been a shift in their behavior that concerns you? Do they have difficulty making or maintaining friendships? Do they act mean, have angry outbursts or act aggressively because they cannot control their actions? Are they restless or have difficulty concentrating? These are just some of the problems I assist children, adolescents and their families in overcoming. Call me and we can talk further. I also work with adults with anxiety, parenting challenges, or those who have struggled with trauma.

We have plenty of
art
supplies and games for children (or any age) to use in exploring themselves and their emotions in a contained, safe, and friendly environment.
I believe anyone can benefit from therapy. Seeing a therapist means you were willing to ask for help in dealing with the overwhelming circumstances that sometimes come your way. We all face times of anxiety and depression, and a little professional guidance can help us not just survive these times, but can result in happier, healthier people for facing the trials. I particularly believe that giving this healing space to children is beneficial; allowing their experiences and emotions to be treated respectfully and resolved empathically can let them move forward and make better choices throughout the rest of their lives.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
