It is common for difficult emotions, stressful relationships, and
trauma
to keep us stuck in unhealthy patterns.
Have you noticed yourself feeling stuck, hopeless or disconnected from the rest of the world? Too often we believe that the feelings of depression, anxiety, or the symptoms of
trauma
we've experienced are just part of life, something we have to put up with. For fear of being a “burden” or being judged for our experiences and feelings, we avoid discussing our problems with others. We may wish to grow or heal but are unsure of where or how to begin when we feel overwhelmed with what life has thrown at us. Life does not have to continue this way, there is hope.

Do your emotions feel out of control? Are you prone to feeling anxious and irritable? Do you tend to feel guilt and shame?
Trauma
, whether from the past or more recent, can show up in ways that are not that easy to recognize. In emotional survival mode, you can feel disconnected and alone, while also feeling resentful towards others in your personal life or in the workplace. In this difficult place, it’s common to try to distract from how you feel by turning to food, screens, shopping, and other people’s needs. The truth is, until you heal from
trauma
, you can’t feel truly free to live your life.

There are many paths to healing and change. The journey is an active one and there is success in simply taking the first step, acknowledging a change is needed. I have worked in mental health services since 1988 and have worked with many different people and issues. I believe that developing awareness, of emotions, thoughts and behavior, is the starting place and that understanding where we come from, what got us here can be helpful, but changing how we feel today is the best way to have a sense of power. I specialize in somatic, or a body based approach to treatment of
trauma
. Please call or email me for a therapy session today.

Have you experienced neglect or
trauma
? Is your kid struggling to relate to today's world or your family grappling with arguments? Sometimes these experiences can cause anxiety, depression and body symptoms. I work with young people and adults to feel more joy, increase self esteem and develop the self-compassion needed to heal. We each have unique gifts to share with the world and these can often be drowned out by expectations as we grow up or by others' needs. I am passionate about helping people see and create their own vision of wholeness and happiness, and to hear and express their authentic voice.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
