You are worried about your child. They have started to show signs of anxiety or depression which is starting to make you concerned. You try to lighten the mood when you can, but it is getting harder everyday. You never know what might make them upset and feel completely lost on what to do. You feel bad about the tension in the home and hate arguing with them, but sometimes its's the only thing you can do to get them to listen. You feel worried about what they may be thinking or doing like self-harm or
suicidal
thoughts and that terrifies you.

My work revolves around one's strengths. Every client has strengths although it may seem difficult to identify them at times. Being strength based helps to increase self motivation for each client. Much of my therapy includes helping to challenge various thought distortions and beliefs. Many times life can take us on an unexpected path and we need support to get back to where we want to be. This can be done in a variety of ways which is why I take a multidimensional approach to treatment.

I work with couples, adult individuals, teens, and families that are looking to deepen their awareness and have an expressed desire to create a deeper connection within their relationships. The couple relationship, the way in which you emotionally connect, express yourself and grow, can be one of the hardest but most rewarding aspects of life someone can commit to. Being vulnerable enough to allow yourself and someone else to love you is hard, but also brings fulfillment, compassion, and empathy to fruition. I enjoy working with folks who are curious about how they can find more fulfillment in their lives and their relationships.

I believe we all have the strength to overcome struggles we face in life, but that comes with the understanding that knowledge without application is just information. Action is required. It’s the small, meaningful steps that can change the trajectory of our lives and it’s what we do with what we learn which allows us to move from revelation to realization, from seed to strength. If you allow me to partner with you, I’ll give you space to talk and I will supportively challenge the narrative that you are telling yourself. I will help you to figure out what is true and what is not.

I believe that when you first begin therapy, you hope to make changes in yourself that will improve your life. Possible changes might include ending the feeling that you are basically bad, or always at fault, or never good enough, or unlovable. You are aware that such feelings have caused you to lose valued relationships, caused you failure in school or at work, and possibly caused you to behave in ways you regret. If you are usually depressed, anxious, lonely or feeling guilty, you hope that therapy will bring relief, that you can finally begin enjoying your life.

I am Dr. Kate Bautch, a licensed psychological associate and I work with adults, adolescents, and children, providing individual, couples, and group therapy. In our sessions I seek to create a safe space in which you feel respected, understood, and supported. From that place, we will work together to identify what is causing your pain, and how we can use your resilience and personal strengths to facilitate the positive change you are seeking. I approach each session with acceptance, empathy, compassion, and sometimes a little humor to lighten the mood when appropriate.

I have a strong interest in working with individuals who have faced trauma to help them rediscover their voice and feel heard. As well as, couples who are struggling with connection, infidelity and more. I acknowledge that every individual is unique and has their own story. As someone who identifies as South Asian, I understand being at the crossroads of societal pressures while trying to balance multiple expectations with various cultural considerations and the stigma that may come around mental health.

I believe in working with my clients to develop collaborative goals that will allow us to utilize evidence-based, culturally-responsive and faith-based interventions, as desired. My methods incorporate both eastern and western healing interventions and always begin with a holistic life assessment. Too often clinicians work to make the symptoms feel more manageable. I like to do things differently. I work alongside my clients to discover the root causes of their struggles and witness my clients empowering themselves to unravel those unhealthy habits and replace them with healthy ones. Together we can learn how to heal and thrive.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
