If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about your path forward, you’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. My ideal client is someone who’s ready to look inward and make meaningful changes, even if they’re not quite sure where to begin. You might be navigating anxiety, depression, relationship issues, identity struggles, or simply trying to understand yourself better. Maybe life hasn’t gone as planned, and you're feeling discouraged or lost. Whatever you're facing, you want support, not judgment, a place where you can be seen, heard, and valued as you are.

Hello! My name is Melissa MacGown. I am a licensed marriage & family therapist who has been in the psychology field for nearly 20 years! My approach is easy-going but concise. I am happy to sit and listen or ask helpful questions to learn about the issues or presenting problem(s) that brought you to seek counseling support. My approach is professional while being humanistic and down-to-earth. I tend to gear my treatment towards the individual, couple, or group/family. However, I lean towards a sort of problem-solving, goal-oriented, solution-focused approach. I want clients to feel heard, understood, and cared for.

I have been working with and supporting children, teens, and adults for twenty-seven years through various methods, including child therapy and individual therapy.
Our first session is about getting to know each other, gathering enough information to help me see the bigger picture of what you are looking for and struggling with. If the client is a child, then the parent (s) are strongly encouraged to join the first session to help me better understand your child.

I most enjoy working with clients who are willing to look within and accept responsibility (not blame) for their thoughts, feelings and behavior. I feel especially honored to work with clients who have had traumatic childhood experiences, including sexual abuse. Although these events can have devastating consequences, I have found that survivors of childhood trauma can also be catapulted to higher than usual levels of consciousness and well-being when the traumas are healed. In other words, therapy is a very gratifying journey to walk with a client. I work well with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, eating disorders and dissociative disorders.

I’m here for the people who want to experience deep and lasting healing and transformation. I don’t do surface level, excessive focus on “symptom management” and coping skills. I do “let’s examine how you make meaning of reality and improve the quality of relationship with yourself, others, and the world. And let’s repattern your body and mind into an experience of safety and ease." I love diving deep with you into the identity structures that keep destructive and painful patterns in place and supporting you with discovering the innate wisdom that will guide you into a relationship of profound trust with, and love for, yourself.

We can all benefit from therapy at some point in our lives. You don’t have to be “crazy,” desperate or on the brink of a meltdown to go to therapy. People with strong support systems can deal with the day in and day out struggles of life without needing therapy. When do we know it's time to seek therapy? Most of us try to deal with struggles on our own until they become unmanageable. When you are no longer yourself its time to seek help: overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger, changes in your eating and sleeping patterns, soothing with alcohol or drugs are several examples. Take the first step towards better health.

I have worked with adults/parents, adolescents as well as children with a range of concerns, anywhere from Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Disruptive, Impulse-Control, conduct disorders, substance use/abuse and I believe listening and connecting is one of the most important parts of therapy.
I strongly believe therapy is an important relationship, in which you feel heard, understood and safe while also being open to new challenges for growth. My goal as your therapist is to provide you with support, positive regard, compassion, guidance, a level of accountability, advocacy at times, a listening ear and sound clinical advice to help you find the strength and courage to confront and make sense of difficult emotions and experiences so you can thrive in life.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
