I have expertise in men's issues, adolescent boy's issues, cancer survival, college student adjustment, and issues related to religion/
spirituality
.
For some, therapy is about accumulating tools and strategies for addressing specific life-struggles. For others, therapy is about better understanding oneself: solidifying your understanding of how you arrived at this place in your life and exploring how to find your way to a better, more fulfilling space. I provide individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy services for adults and adolescents. I have the luxury of saying that I love what I do for a living, and I look forward to working with you in addressing your presenting concerns. Feel welcome to contact me for more information about my practice.

I have had the privilege to work with individuals, children, teens, and families to provide support for anxiety, depression, behavior issues, parenting concerns, exploration of
spirituality
and religion, communication challenges, and family relationship difficulties. I have been trained in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and enjoy encouraging and supporting caregivers as they learn how to navigate the joys and struggles of parenting. I have also been trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which allows me to help others process and find healing from past traumatic events.

Hi, I am Karen and I enjoy therapeutic work with individuals and couples. Although I work with a number of mental health issues I especially enjoy working with depression, anxiety, grief, emotional trauma, self-loathing, self-esteem, shame and
spirituality
. As a therapist my goal is to help clients live to their true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While together we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to help you better understand and resolve the problems you currently face.

As a therapist I provide a warm, accepting, comforting, safe environment for your inner work. I focus on relationships, family issues, life transitions, men's issues, trauma, grief, and
spirituality
. My approach is EMDR, relational, client centered, CBT, mindfulness, and somatic experiencing. Life has taught me that we need more than a technique to facilitate change. Otherwise, a "life manual" would be enough. I have learned that I am most effective as transparent and authentic "me" showing up for "you". Additionally, research has shown that "relationship" is the key ingredient for transformation.

I am foundationally a Narrative therapist, but integrate CBT, DBT,
spirituality
, and mindfulness principles, along with healthy doses of lightness and humor.
My passion is helping individuals move through challenges and toward living life as their most authentic self through exploring and utilizing the personal energy and wisdom they already possess. This may include navigating significant transitions while maintaining a sense of self, finding strength and meaning in dark times, or facilitating present moment awareness and joy. Each of us has unique, complex stories which, at times, can create internal conflict, blocking us from moving forward. I work with you to accept and integrate conflictual parts of your experience and self so that you can move forward with increased self-awareness, self-appreciation and openness to experience.

I utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Narrative, and a Psychodynamic approach to work with teens and adults experiencing low self-esteem, grief, anxiety, depression, codependency, major life transitions, self-harm, and leadership and
spirituality
issues.
It can be difficult and uncomfortable to talk to someone we barely know about our thoughts and feelings, especially if they are upsetting to us. At some point in our lives, we will need someone to walk with us for awhile. Therapy is about me walking with you. I consider this a privilege and love helping people see how valuable they are, no matter what they have gone through.

If you’ve ever felt that no matter how hard you try it is NEVER enough, if your obsession with weight and food have begun to control YOU, if you are weary under the weight of your own inner critic or haunted by the memories in your head and feel there is no one you can trust or with whom you could risk sharing the reality in your head, I am here to help. I know what it feels like to be in your shoes. I know that you likely can’t even conceive of another, freer way of living. But I am certain of this- true recovery is attainable, not just for some of us, for all of us. It IS hard work. And it’s infinitely worth it.

You know there's more to life than the loneliness, frustration, and fatigue you somehow keep coming back to. Despite the many times you've mustered the strength to push through and keep trying, sometimes you feel like true lasting change is hopeless. But something in you keeps calling, drawing you forward in search of the ease, passion, inspiration, and freedom you're longing for.

I believe that we each have an innate force that drives us towards wholeness and the fulfillment of our individual potential. However, life experiences can lead to a break from our personal experience of the soul, resulting in a deep sense of loss and isolation from self and others. I work collaboratively with my clients to remove obstacles that block the connection to a deeper experience of the soul and authentic self, and then move towards the realization of a fulfilling and purposeful life. I believe in working with my clients to develop collaborative goals that will allow us to utilize evidence-based, culturally-responsive and faith-based interventions, as desired. My methods incorporate both eastern and western healing interventions and always begin with a holistic life assessment. Too often clinicians work to make the symptoms feel more manageable. I like to do things differently. I work alongside my clients to discover the root causes of their struggles and witness my clients empowering themselves to unravel those unhealthy habits and replace them with healthy ones. Together we can learn how to heal and thrive.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
