Hi there, I'm Charity! With all the challenges life presents, coupled with the recent upheaval of our daily existence, prioritizing one's mental health is now more essential than ever. As we continue to adapt as a society to a "new normal", at times we may feel overwhelmed by a world that is constantly in a state of flux. Fear, anxiety, or a sense of powerlessness may sometimes engulf us and our ability to cope with a world that seems to lack consistency and stability.

As a person of color, I understand the significant impact our identities have on our experience. Feeling invisible or invalidated because of how we identify or how we present, can influence the way we think about ourselves and others. I welcome the discussion of one's intersectionality of identities and deconstructing the narratives we've learned to adopt. For those who find themselves feeling stuck in life or in transition, I am here to be a guide, a witness, and an advocate for you on your path towards healing and understanding.

DBT is the gold-standard treatment for Emotion Dysregulation that can present itself in various ways such as suicidal behaviors, self-harm, substance use, impulsivity, unhealthy relationships, poor boundaries and difficulties with motivation.
My ideal Client is someone who is motivated to work on themselves and dive deeper into emotional wounds that create barriers to your every day life. Being ready for change is an important factor in treatment feeling beneficial and we aren’t always motivated for change. Honesty and openness are key ingredients to building a life worth living, even on the days we feel burnt out and unmotivated.

Our adolescent and young adult programs specialize in providing DBT and DBT-Prolonged Exposure (DBT-PE), ACT and Exposure Therapy (ExRP) to treat anxiety, OCD, depression, gender dysphoria, suicidal behaviors, non- suicidal self-injury (self-harm), substance use, disordered eating, dissociative disorders, somatic disorders, autism spectrum disorder, non-verbal learning disability, as well as PTSD and Complex-PTSD.
We are passionate about addressing the disturbing fact that mental illness continues to increase despite greater evidence-based treatment availability than ever before. We believe this is due to the unethical managed-care practices, rigid clinical delivery models, and interventions developed on a fundamental misunderstanding about emotions and emotional disorders. Our services teach individuals and families how to listen to primary emotions that signal information about our core needs and how to act opposite to secondary emotions that cause distress and suffering. We provide state-of-the-art evidence-based treatments (EBT), working as a multidisciplinary team to provide collaborative, individualized, and comprehensive treatment targeting your child's individual symptoms, their academic and social experiences, transactions within the family system, and whole-family support through individual therapy, group therapy, caregiver coaching, family therapy & couples therapy. Services can flex from weekly outpatient care to intensive outpatient programming, delivering 1-15 hours of individualized care. Progress is measured through weekly measurement-based care and monthly team meetings.

As a professor and researcher, my clinical practice reflects the state-of-the art in evidence-based practice for depression, suicide, self-harm, anger, borderline personality disorder, and anxiety.
Contemporary approaches to cognitive-behavioral therapy balance active listening with change and problem-solving. Such a balance is demonstrated in DBT. I conduct standard, comprehensive DBT as well as cognitive-behavioral interventions informed by DBT principles.

My treatment forte includes Suicidal Ideation, Anger Management, ADHD, Personality Disorders, Trauma, and Attachment Disorders.
I found my unique sense of purpose and learned about the life-changing abilities of psychotherapy when a young man approached me and shared his intent to commit suicide. Responding to his crisis situation compelled me to help others. I immediately started on the path to become a psychotherapist. There is no greater feeling.

I specialize in supporting folks struggling with suicidal ideation, folks navigating the challenges of trauma & dissociation (including Dissociative Identity Disorder) & folks struggling with emotion regulation (including Depression, Bipolar & Borderline).
Healing from trauma, reclaiming power, growing from struggle and learning to work WITH emotions rather than AGAINST them are the goals I strive to support my clients in achieving. I want to help my clients move beyond simply not feeling so depressed, anxious, angry or manic. I want to help them transcend their pain, feel like they are fulfilling their purpose in life, are able to truly love themselves and are cultivating relationships that feed their soul. Narrative Therapy teaches my clients to transform the meaning of what they have been through and techniques from Existential Therapy help clients create or discover their purpose.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
