I have a passion for helping others and helping them find their best self. I believe that when you change the way you think, you can change the way you feel and behave. I also believe that the therapeutic process should be a highly personal and transformative experience. I value and rely on the relational component of therapy and strive for my clients to feel truly heard and understood in sessions. I believe that building a trusting, safe, and collaborative
relationship
is essential to making progress in therapy. Viktor Frankl said, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.".

Most of us strive for a happy and harmonious life, yet there are times when life can be a challenging process. Commonly, the people who contact me are looking for help with the distress that is currently occurring in their lives. While some feel depressed or anxious, others feel trapped by patterns of frustrating or destructive behaviors or symptoms from chronic illness. Some are struggling to navigate the on-going distress in their lives by themselves, while others need help dealing with an immediate crisis. Some clients have just ended a romantic
relationship
, while others are just beginning one.

Therapy offers the opportunity to share with someone, maybe for the first time who you really are. A safe therapist will help minimize feelings of shame and guide you toward deep appreciation for the younger parts of yourself that protected you from overwhelming pain. Unprocessed pain makes it difficult to trust that the people you care about most are attached to you. In
couples
therapy both sides likely feel unseen, alone, and fearful that they are not worth being loved the way they desire.

Most individuals have times when they don't feel effective, or they fear taking the next step or making a wrong decision. Issues such as anxiety, addictions,
relationship
problems, past sexual abuse or trauma, personality factors or other mental health disorders may get in the way of creating the life you want to live. Psychotherapy can help you define specifically where you want to go from here, and identify patterns and other factors that may be keeping you from achieving and creating your best self.

I do a lot of
couples
therapy, I enjoy working with motivated
couples
and I have helped a lot of
couples
repair their marriages.
I felt called to become a marriage/family therapist when the decision to change careers didn't make sense. I ran a successful computer company, fresh off of a decade as an executive for a software company. I had a love for the study of people, and relationships, having received my bachelor's from the University of Utah in MassComm with a minor in Psychology. I was in a wonderful
relationship
, having a safe environment to share hopes, dreams, fears struggles... I realized that not everyone had this support in place to process highs, lows, and to learn to grow.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
