There is a myth that it is better to do it on our own; that seeking help equates to weakness. The truth is that no one can live a solitary life while experiencing wholeness. We all need someone to hear us, to see us and not turn away, to provide the support and encouragement that keeps us moving forward. When your thoughts and feelings are out of sync with the reality of your life, change is needed. Therapy provides a safe, comfortable space in which you feel understood, free to explore who you are and what you need to live a happy life. Mindfulness , EMDR and self compassion techniques can help you to heal trauma and rediscover joy.

My therapy approach stems from psychodynamic and CBT techniques with the integration of play therapy and mindfulness in order to provide a holistic approach.
Everyone has core beliefs that are often formulated at an early age, and can refer to a cognitive construct such as "I don't belong" or "people can't be trusted." When someone is anxious the core belief of "I am a failure" could be activated. When activated these beliefs are experienced by the individual as absolute truths. Although we may "believe" them, the good news is these thoughts are largely false beliefs and can be overcome to fit who you value yourself to be and the purpose you see fit for your life.

Together we can use techniques such as mindfulness , tapping, and other anxiety reducing techniques to find joy in the present moment and reclaim your life.
Your thoughts are racing. You are questioning your next move. Worst case scenarios are all you can think about. The “what if’s” in your brain start taking over. What if I lose control? What if I get a heart attack? Are others noticing what's happening to me? Where is the nearest exit? Fear begins to overwhelm your thoughts and panic begins to take over. Here we go again. Another panic attack and I’ve lost all control. Another day consumed by anxiety. Even though you want to be bold and fight, your brain tells you that you just can’t do it. It’s always going to be this way.

I primarily use the Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), am trained in EMDR and employ mindfulness , Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and good old-fashioned listening.
Tired of depression, anxiety, fear of abandonment, recurrent relationship problems, low self-esteem/self-hatred, substances, or just feeling stuck? Feels like no one understands? My focus is on trauma and early attachment injuries. I work with teenagers and adults, especially people with disabilities (including Deaf/hard of hearing) and international aid workers/expats. My clients want to remember the past but not relive it and free themselves from old pain and fears, so they can get out there and live in color, in touch with their emotions but not ruled by them. All abilities, races, creeds, sexual and gender identities welcome.

While as an individual you are unique, none of us are perfect and we all experience conflict, hardships, and a variety of emotions. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting, two of the best methods for healing trauma and PTSD; talk therapy, mindfulness , sand tray, and dream work.
Pema Chödrön wrote, "Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know." My therapeutic work is Depth Psychology-based, grounded in the knowledge that all emotional pain has a root source, and that to alleviate the symptoms, we must find that source and heal those old wounds. I treat trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, women's issues, codependence, grief & loss, stage of life issues, creativity, and LGBQIA and Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming issues. I work with transgender/NGC adults, and families.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
