I specialize in trauma, anxiety, pregnancy loss, fertility issues, and insomnia.
Experiencing challenge is part of the human condition. When those challenges threaten to overwhelm, having a warm, empathic, non-judgmental therapist to walk alongside you can be extremely helpful. I specialize in helping individuals with a trauma history, recent or remote, to regain confidence and a sense of control in their lives. Understanding how trauma has affected one's outlook on themselves, others, and the world allows lasting change to unfold. In addition to childhood trauma, I work with those who have experienced recent trauma and reproductive trauma, such as pregnancy loss, termination of desired pregnancy , & infertility.

Are you planning to expand your family? Or are you pregnant? A new parent? The transition from starting a family to becoming a parent is supposedly exciting, but perhaps you are experiencing sadness, anxiety, frustrations, scary thoughts, or overwhelming feelings. Or, maybe you are struggling to cope with an eating disorder or body image issues during the pre- pregnancy , pregnancy , and postpartum period. What’s more stressful is that you feel alone in this journey and struggle to find support from your partner and/or loved ones. You hope to be the best parent and also have a career, but struggle with this new identity and transition.

I have supported those in every place along the path, from perinatal mothers through end of life struggles; and still, I have yet to meet two people with the same path.
We’re unfortunately not born with a manual on how to live life. It’s unpredictable complexities jolt us out of the path we had so carefully planned for ourselves, and leave us in a place of feeling lost. These obstacles can appear in various ways; parenting, relationships, work, loss, violence, and sometimes do not appear at all except for a knot in our stomach. What does one do when the next step is not clear? It is in these moments of uncertainty where I can be of help. There is no right or wrong reason, or person, for therapy; it is an opportunity to put life on pause for an hour, while we work together to uncover the next step.

Becoming a mother, whether for the first time or again, can be a difficult change that can often lead to unwanted anxious thoughts, depression, and self-doubt. You may worry about getting it “right” or feel overwhelmed. Before you were a mother, you had another identity and may be trying to get back to yourself. Some moms struggle to bond with baby, but you can learn to nurture a trusting attachment. Becoming pregnant and giving birth can be a powerful experience and you may want to feel more prepared or process a traumatic birth. You deserve support and skills to ease the unique challenges and vulnerable moments in this journey.

Most people are kinder to others than they are to themselves. Having an internal critic who is constantly beating you up inside can lead to anxiety, low mood, and relationship problems. As my clients develop greater self compassion, they see amazing changes in many aspects of their lives.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
