You are doing well in your career, but that success doesn't always translate when it comes to your personal relationships. You find yourself picking the wrong people, again and again. The people you pick end up having different long-term goals, or they are not healthy for you, or it doesn't work out for any number of reasons. Maybe you have already been married, but it didn't work out and you are not sure why, but you want to make sure it doesn't happen to you again. Maybe the relationships that are hardest for you are those with your family of origin. Maybe you've already given up on relationships.

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." -Nelson Mandela. Choosing to seek therapy is an act of hope. I believe that through a supportive therapeutic connection, you can develop resources for healing, uncover inherent strengths, and meet new goals. I specialize in working with tweens, teens, parents, and young adults. I focus on supporting anxiety, depression, family /peer conflict, and those recovering from trauma. I facilitate groups for teens and their parents and have supported survivors of sexual violence. My approach is strength-based and focuses on each client as a whole person, not just the challenges they face.

Does your teenager appear to be struggling with big emotions and uncharacteristic behavior and you and your partner don’t know how to help? Do you feel disconnected from yourself, your partner and your teen? Has there been a communication breakdown in the family and your usual tools to maintain closeness are not working? I understand that sometimes even the strongest families and relationships get shaken up by unexpected feelings and intense situations that their kids go through.

Those I work with are typically trying to manage a time in their life that seems challenging, confusing, and sometimes hopeless. This may manifest as conflict with friends or family , academic decline, a sense of feeling out of control, depressed mood, or anxious distress. My recipe to cultivating a valuable therapeutic experience is part insight through exploration of your family of origin, beliefs, values, culture, and part practical skill use to improve your ability to manage your day-to-day stressors.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Psychology at San Francisco State University; Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Southern California.
Welcome. I have over 10 years experience in the field of psychotherapy (talk therapy). Through the years, I have worked with clients facing a range of stressors, from natural transitions, to abrupt grief and tragedy. It is a normal part of human development to find oneself faced with overwhelming emotions and at a loss for what to do next. These are the times when a licensed and compassionate clinician can be an asset for creating healing and change. At the heart of my work, I aim to help each client turn a season of challenge into an opportunity for character transformation.

I have specialized training in working with relationship issues, depression and anxiety, and family -of-origin issues.
I believe change is rooted in making the unconscious conscious. Rather than just treat the symptoms you may be struggling with, I enjoy journeying deeper with you, trying to understand the root of the issue. As you grow to understand your mind, you will begin to make more mindful, intentional life choices, toward a more satisfying life.

I work collaboratively with each individual and/or family to design a treatment tailored to the unique constellation of each individual's personality, character and psychological strengths and present life challenges.
Many of the clients I work with have either lost or struggled to develop a sense of control in their lives and relationships– having fallen into destructive patterns of substance abuse/addiction and impulsive and/or self-harming behaviors. Others may be struggling with an excess of self-imposed control– leading to a sense of isolation and fear of taking healthy risks. Some are confronting a major life-transition, loss of identity, divorce, death of a loved one or faced with a pervading sense of meaninglessness. All are, in one way or another, seeking to increase their sense of personal agency and effectiveness in daily life.

I am passionate about child development and have specialty in working with numerous childhood disorders presenting in early childhood (5 years-old) and onto adulthood, trauma disorders, challenges to family functioning such as intergenerational difficulties and parent-child relationship problems.
I strive to facilitate a dialogue that both empowers and engages clients in their own self-healing, valuing the co-creation of a transformative narrative and experience. As a licensed clinical psychologist, experienced in treating both children and adults, I view emotional and behavioral challenges as a dynamic outcome that develops as a result of complex interactions across time, as opposed to something inherently "broken" inside an individual.

Seeking support for your family or yourself takes a lot of bravery.
Carl Jung said "The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you really are" and this is something I am passionate about: helping my clients uncover who they truly are and live the lives that they deserve. I primarily work with children, teens and young adults and enjoy creating unique interventions based on upon their interests and goals. Using talk, art and play I help clients explore their experiences with anxiety, depression, school challenges, and trauma. Having previously worked in school settings I have witnessed first hand how important mental health counseling is for children, teens and young adults.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
