Specializing in relationships and trauma healing, I am passionate about supporting people to lead with integrity, effectiveness, and delight.
Ease. Connection. Purpose. Joy. These are the birthright of every human. When they’re hard to find, therapy can help. I have seen again and again that even the deepest wounds and most entrenched stagnation can give way—with the right kinds of skilled support—to growth, transformation, and flourishing. Whether you struggle with depression, anxiety, burnout, addiction, PTSD, relational conflict, self-doubt, or just want to live with more vitality and authenticity, I would be honored to accompany you in your journey. I particularly love assisting social justice leaders to embody the wellness they strive to make possible for others.

Hello! My name is Emily Linaman and I want to help you work with your strengths, and identify behaviors and patterns that may hold you back from growing into the best version of yourself. Old habits die hard, especially when they are related to past trauma survival skills and other coping mechanisms that no longer serve you. As I earn your trust, I hope we can explore how certain behaviors and habits lead to numbing out, depression, dissociation, isolation, self-sabotage and self-harm. Together, we can explore defense mechanisms, the functions they serve, and try out new coping skills to release you from the past and set you free.

If you have trauma, addiction, hyper or hypo-arousal, I can help with these through a combination of somatic psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Life may feel out of control for you right now. You may be using unhealthy coping skills - like drinking too much, or over eating - and perhaps you are beating yourself up about it. You have no time or space to figure out how to do things differently and don't feel good about how your relationships are going. The pandemic has really highlighted areas in your life that you need to make changes in but you feel stuck. Perhaps you are moving from crisis to crisis and the same cycle keeps repeating itself and you don't know why. Perhaps the ghosts of your past keep sabotaging your present. But there is help and a way out - you can do it!

These are largely manifestations of past trauma, deeper conflicts which have gone unexamined.
Do you feel unheard, undervalued or stuck in life? When things are troubling you and you're feeling depressed and/or stressed, yet talking with friends or families only goes so far. In their desire to help, they shower you with advice, try to cheer you up and distract you. But when distraction is no longer an option, and you want or need to face what it is, that is troubling you. Then I am here for you. I am a bilingual (English/Cantonese) licensed Marriage Family Therapist. I have over 20 years of clinical experience in mental health including my current position at Berkeley Mental Health as a Senior Behavioral Health Clinician.

I am a relational therapist and have experience working with addiction, trauma, depression, anxiety, substance misuse and personality disorders.
My ideal client takes many different forms and they are all individualized. My client is suffering and I see it as my role to reduce human suffering so that it is no longer unbearable. I provide both short term (goal oriented), and long term (perhaps, more Existential and Gestalt based) therapy. I'm not going to change your personality, why would I? That makes you the unique individual that you are. My goal is to adjust and provide strategies for eliminating harmful behaviors that cause suffering and an inability to live in peace with oneself and with others.

In the best of conditions, orienting ourselves towards personal growth is challenging and requires focus, dedication, and support. During major life events, staying on this mindful path can become overwhelming and we may find ourselves unable to find our bearings. For over 12 years, I have helped clients navigate difficult life transitions, such as recovery from addiction, overcoming trauma, healing from grief, cultivating healthy relationships, and achieving developmental milestones.

I offer a holistic approach to therapy that includes traditional talk therapy and somatic experiencing, a therapeutic modality that supports the body in releasing trauma that is stored in the nervous system.
I'm passionate about working with queer, neurodivergent folks who have experienced trauma. I also enjoy working with folks who identify as part of the “still COVIDing” community. I offer support around exploring gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and coming out. I also enjoy supporting folks in developing secure attachment and healing past attachment wounds. A lot of the folks I work with are experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, and stress. They are seeking a better understanding of themselves and some relief. I support them in bettering their relationships with themselves and others.

Advanced Trainings: Trauma Coupling Dynamics, Somatic Narrative and Touch Skills Training with Dr Kathy Kain.
I feel it is a privilege to be able to walk with people on their healing journey. Both in my career and in my personal educational pursuits I have spent years learning how trauma affects us psychologically and physiologically. I am a licensed psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. One of the most fundamental aspects of being human is our desire to live in harmony with ourselves. Trauma, however, is often a major obstacle to achieving that goal. My mission is to support clients to build resilience and re-negotiate with their traumas in order to find a healthier relationship with themselves and others.

I have helped with healing from trauma, behavioral concerns, emotional dysregulation, and more.
We are unfortunately not born with a manual on how to live life. It’s unpredictable complexities jolt us out of the path we had so carefully planned for ourselves, and leave us in a place of feeling lost. These obstacles can appear in various ways; parenting, relationships, work, loss, violence and sometimes do not appear at all except for a knot in our stomach. What does one do when the next step is not clear? It is in these moments of uncertainty where I can be of help. There is no right or wrong reason, or person, for therapy; it is an opportunity to put life on pause for an hour, while we work together to uncover the next step.

It is brave of you to seek therapy. It is not easy and choosing a therapist and taking the time to find the right space takes time and effort as you look to find the right fit for your personal journey. It is courageous to start this journey! I enjoy working with creative and artistic people who have experienced trauma in their past.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
