Everyone deserves support in a crisis. For some, it may have been an event that occurred years ago, and for others it is more recent. Seeking professional help and support is often times the first step to coping with a difficult life period or transition. I believe that healing and empowerment are wholly achievable and begin with a trusting and accepting therapist-client relationship in a safe therapeutic environment.

Hello, my name is Lesli Mitchell, and I have been a practicing LCSW since 2002. I have worked with clients with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting/family problems, discrimination issues, abuse, and more. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, psychodynamic, and expressive arts if there is an interest. We all benefit from having someone listen nonjudgmentally, encourage us to explore our feelings and thoughts, provide different perspectives on the problem or issues at hand, and ask questions for reflection. Therapy is about supporting people as they make the courageous attempt to change their life.

Hi, my name is Dr. Martin. In my seven years as a licensed psychologist, I have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapeutic intervention; each patient brings their own unique experiences and skills. That's why I approach sessions with an eclectic and practical style, allowing us to collaboratively formulate goals and develop techniques for success.

Are you in a "caterpillar stage" of life? You sense that you could be more, but you find yourself limited by negative thoughts and/or overwhelming emotions. Or are you in a "chrysalis stage"? Your whole life seems to have disintegrated into nothing recognizable, and you are struggling to make sense of it all. From a foundation of empathy, acceptance, compassion, and respect, I provide a safe and supportive environment in which to grow and/or heal. I work from a "client-centered" approach that helps you find your own answers and healing from within.

People come to therapy because they want to feel better. One in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the U.S. will face sexual assault at some point in their lifetime. If you have experienced rape, childhood abuse, domestic violence, or violent crime, or are a family member of a sex offender, please call me. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, or struggling in relationships, please call me. Working with sexual assault survivors is a rewarding journey of healing. Together, we will move from despair to joy, conflict to peace. "She was helpful, and understanding. I couldn't have gotten to where I am right now without her." KT

I also work with teens, and with individuals who have issues of grief and loss, career transition, anxiety, sexual abuse , and trauma.
I am currently not taking new clients. Are you feeling emotions that are difficult to handle; issues surfacing that you're ready to take a look at? Feeling stressed, anxious or depressed? Possibly your relationships are strained or unsatisfying. Maybe you're struggling with parenting a teenager, or you are a teenager wanting someone to listen? These are all areas of interest to me. I have worked with individuals, couples for over 22 years and am still amazed that while therapy is often not easy, it is truly worth the effort for most people. I have a calm, supportive, interactive style and welcome working with you.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
