Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists in Piedmont, CA
I like to use a mix of eclectic treatment types and inspirations from Humanistic, Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness-Based, Hakomi, Strength-Based, Person-centered, Trauma Focused, and Expressive Arts.
I believe that the power of vulnerability is one of our greatest strengths and ultimately can provide us with a deeper sense of self, security, comfort, and more compassionate towards one another. Coming from a strength-based form of doing therapy and providing support to others, I work to provide my clients with a sense of validation and comfort. As a cis male that identifies as Latinx and as a proud member of the LGBTQIA community, I am able to hold the experience of living in many diverse, cross-cultural emotional experiences that we sometimes may not even know how to begin to understand.

Now accepting adjunct KAP clients-
Being human is a full experience, tender, complex, and often messy. We’re asked to hold relationships, identity, healing, and growth all at once, and it’s easy to lose our center along the way. As a neurodivergent, queer, mixed-race mother and therapist, I understand what it’s like to move through the world with a layered identity and deep feeling, especially when you don’t feel fully reflected or supported in that world. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, queer, Mixed/BIPOC, or navigating multiple identities while standing in an in-between space of transition, uncertainty, or quiet unraveling.

Creating a safe space that allows clients to explore how they feel and what they need in their lives, I tailor therapy to your needs, using an eclectic client-centered approach that includes EMDR, CBT, and mindfulness.
I work with people healing from narcissistic and emotionally abusive relationships. Many thought they had found their soulmate, only to end up in a painful, confusing dynamic. You may feel isolated, blame yourself, and spend hours researching narcissism just to understand what’s happening. You know something has to change. You want to leave, but you don’t know how. That’s where our work together begins.
I work with people who are physically located in California.

I have studied mindfulness and meditation for the past 15 years and find that even those who “don’t like meditation” can be surprised by how a few mindfulness skills/ tricks can significantly help them to reduce their suffering in areas of challenge.
Finding the right match in a therapist is essential to beginning this uniquely personal process. Therapy often gets a bad name when there is a sense of disconnect between client and therapist, which can make therapy feel like another struggle. Life is challenging enough. I am committed to creating a comfortable and genuine dialogue with each client, or to offering more fitting outside referrals. I am able to put people at ease, welcoming humor where appropriate.

One way that people can cope with trauma, anxiety and depression is to distract ourselves with work. While this is a functional way to survive, it can also lead to feelings of isolation, numbness, extreme stress and burnout. Future goals and dreams may feel hopeless, you may be feeling like it is getting harder and harder just to move through your day. It may become challenging to connect with others and perhaps impossible to connect with any joy. In these times of uncertainty, it makes sense that we would be reaching out for support, reevaluating what is important and talking through ideas on how to move forward.

My work is rooted in mindfulness, narrative based work, and social justice.
Finding the right therapist can be daunting, and for some, it can be the most difficult step. I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation so that you can assess if we are the right fit. I work with teens and adults presenting with concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/ loss, chronic health concerns, relationship issues, and life transitions. In our work together we will explore your strengths and root you in them. We will define your values and explore how to live your life in harmony with them. We will also create space for the areas in your life where you want change and navigate the path to get you there.

Among the things I help people with is holding the spectrum of living while relating to ourselves with compassion and skill. My trauma-informed practice focuses on people experiencing all kinds of life transitions, work stress, grief and loss, including traumatic loss, and the integration of transformational experiences - whether these are brought on by life events, natural means, or psychedelics. I also help facilitate people entering an altered state of conscious soberly with brainwave entrainment, as this can accelerate the therapeutic work.

My Therapy style is very compassionate and nonjudgmental. I incorporate and work from the stance of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SF), and client-centered therapies in my practice. My treatment approach is primarily relational, valuing authenticity and connection with my clients, drawing on a range of clinical interventions and strategies based on what I believe will work best for each individual. One size does not fit all in therapy, my treatment plans are tailored based on clients' needs.

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
