As a member of the LGBT community and a first-generation Latino, Alex understands firsthand the complexities of gender identity, societal expectations, managing relationship dynamics, and mental health challenges. Let's connect. Generally, I would like to do a general check-in. We will follow up on our last session and discuss your week. If time permits, I would like to engage you in a more formal exercise that will promote further discussion and continue to make progress toward your goals.

For those of us who cannot find the right answers, it is usually because we make decisions that lead us to predictable outcomes rather than creative solutions. I assist clients who are interested in exploration of how the patterns of our lives limit our development of options. My idea of a successful outcome will show itself as a spontaneous and original experience that challenges the status quo, while encouraging the growth of supportive relationships. An exploration of family experiences can offer an effective recognition of patterns limiting the development of options, and the promotion of living in the moment.

I believe that we all face friction in our relationships and day-to-day living. Consistently encountering the same types of issues, however, can be the result of blind spots that blur our view of reality. Psychotherapy exists, in part, to help identify these areas of hazy perception and to resolve them over time. And with improved clarity come choices that are more plentiful, more attainable, and more likely to result in an improved appreciation of everything around us -including ourselves. This process can only happen in a safe, non-threatening environment.

Emotions and thoughts can be overwhelming. They can sometimes feel like a constant, distracting background noise. Clients sometimes compare their brains to "a hamster on a wheel". A noisy brain that is distracting , draining and all too often active at bedtime.

My ideal client is someone who feels stuck—perhaps in their marriage, their personal identity, or in navigating anxiety or emotional pain. They might be a teen struggling with pressure and disconnection, a couple drifting apart and unsure how to repair the damage, or an adult battling depression. They are often weary from trying to "figure it out" on their own and are looking for clarity, peace, and real, lasting change. Their goals typically include restoring relationships, managing emotions more effectively, and rediscovering a sense of purpose. Deep down, they want to live freely—unburdened by fear, shame, or disconnection.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
